Six of my friends and I headed up to Red Lake this past Friday am. We arrived at the lake around 11:00am and set up camp with our two wheel houses. Thought we would get away from the big groups and win big, well, we were away from the big groups anway! Friday we fished from about 12:30 until 6:00 pretty hard for very little reward. We obviously did not pick a very good spot. I should have listened to my neighbor and not went out as far as we did. We ended up catching 5 eyes on Friday night between 8:00pm and 1:30a.m., not a lot of action!! We were into a couple of really great card games so we were having fun at least!
Saturday morning we ate breakfast and picked up camp for the new spot! We were set up by late morning and then decided to take the portables out and see what we could find. Once again we came back & !! What was going on?? Well, after getting back to home base we had heard that the spot we set up camp on did pretty well on Friday and the guys that stayed at camp while we went out searching had caught a few eyes that were in the slot finally. We got our first crappie around 8:00pm and then the walleyes started to hit pretty consistant, but still mostly too big and a few a little smaller than 12″. Jamie caught the first seven or eight fish on Friday and I caught about as many walleyes on Saturday night. Craig caught the first crappie on Saturday that came in at a whopping 15-1/2″, what a sow!! Jamie caught another 14-3/4″ shortly after that and we all thought we were going to cash in on a pile of crappies, I did say thought we were didn’t I?? We only caught walleyes after that as the cards were flying and the laughter roared through the house! We were cleaning up and getting ready to finally go to sleep around 3:30am when the rattle reels started rattling! Jamie caught another nice 14″ piggy and him and I caught about another 5 or 6 eyes until 4:00a.m. Derrik and Craig caught another nice 14″ slab and a few walleyes over in their house during the wee hours of the a.m. also.

Sunday morning we woke at around 9:00a.m. to the sound of a rattle reel making a noise that didn’t seem to make anybody really jump out of the sack!! Danny crawled from the bunk above me and mumbled something in the line of “you lazy “Bad Word” ‘s get up”!!! He reeled in a nice 18″ eye and we all decided to get up and fish. We needed 5 more eyes to complete our limit and we were determined to do it. Derrik, Craig and Danny had to take off at around 11:30a.m. and get back to their wives or face the so Jeff, Tom, Jamie and I continued to fish until about 2:00. We ended up one short of our limit of eyes and a whole bunch shy of our limit of Red Lake Slabs. We did get another 8 or nine fish and missed about another 10 or 12 that got off or broke the line.
I caught the biggest eye which came in at 23-1/2″ and Craig had the biggest Slab at 15-1/2″.
We had an awesome time and we will all be back next year as a group to do it all again.

Looks like you had a blast!

You should have your buddies hold the fish a little further out next time so we can get a good look

Coppertop, I know, I know, the house needs more ice time than it is getting but it will be seeing more soon. I’m sure Jay is sick of seeing that thing in my yard. I had to finish a few necessities inside to make it a little more “Comfortable” if you know what I mean.
I’m bringing the better half to the pond this weekend and I’m hoping she gets a hawg, or I’ll even settle for one! I will be taking it to Lake of The Woods for the remainder of the season after that.
    BTW, nice wheels!!

You are mistaken on the size of the fish i caught at 7 30 am on sunday.. it was just shy of twenty.. I couldn’t believe that I had to come down from the top bunk to catch that fish.. and the other 3 guys, 2 right next to the hole wouldn’t budge a muscle to pull in that pretty fish! It was a great weekend in “The Cooler”! Can’t wait for next year!
