What to bring?

I’ll be heading to URL in a few weeks for my first ice trip there along with a few friends that don’t ice fish a whole lot. I was looking for suggestions on tackle to bring with. We’ll be chasing the crappies and walleyes mainly, so what types and colors of lures should I bring along?

    Thanks so much!

Glow red – Fatboys, turn the hook out a little bit to increase hookup percentage on crappies, head hook your minnow. Fish with a spring bobber, trust me it’s worth it! Your second line should be a glow hook, normally white or chartreuse, with a fathead or a emerald shiner under a bobber. Call it the wildcard line, with any luck you will be too busy catching fish on your jigging rod to keep it baited and down the hole. For the walleyes, well… They will hit anything and everything!!

well if you know me at all- I try something new each year but my main staple is still the same- stay away from blue-go for hot red, hot pink, hot green glows and a good led light, the water is stained up on Red so some are recomending bright beads or anything that shines if you have “jigganist” thats what I call those that cant stop jigging there bait long enough for the fish to catch it and its a great tactic for those sweedish pimple jiggers or heavy lead headed jigs- man your fishing the best lake for the best fish and only in less than 12-15 feet of water minus the depth of the ice ( depending if you count the water at the top of the hole or where the bottom of the ice is)- stay to larger hooks not those tiny hooks you use for half dollar sunny’s and not the big ones for 10# eyes- I have no tackle company backing me all theses years so I can say what I want and I can point you in the right direction- I like secrets- stay with 6# test its a good line for average fish size in that lake- run no less than a 1 ft steel leader if your going for gators-they kinda like to bite the line that feeds them

I just lined up a few rods with 4lb trilene ice, any thoughts on this? I’m thinking I should have maybe went with 6, we’ll be going after crappie, and walleye, not gators.

I use 2# on red and have never broke a line this year.Check that, one time on a gator. You just have to play them right, your 4# will do just fine.

Has anyone tried reelweeds up on Red this year? If so, did you see any noticable difference when the weeds were in the water?

    Thanks,

    Matt
