Try Chad Benson, He is a full time guide on Cass and rents houses on Red. I have rented from for years and have done very well. 218-556-0823
check out Outdoor Authority… a good friend set us up with them last year and i got to know the owner (Danny) a bit while were we there. not only is he a great guy but he’s also a gulf war vet and any small ammount that i can give back by helping his business is money well spent
I would check out UP NORTH FISh HOUSE RENTALS out of Rogers resort on the south shore. Very good accomadations and great customer service. Ninty five percent of there houses are wheel houses so they are always on the move and very affordable. Good luck fishing
For those of you that have fished upper red lake in recent years, how is the crappie population coming along? I’ve heard its only a shadow of what it once was. I have always wanted to go to red for slabs but have been discouraged by the alleged decline in the population.
The crappie report is very slow in the winter. We had eight of our rental houses out on December 14th through late February and our customers caught a total of 14 crappies all year. Most were not targeting crappies and fishing real close to the bottom. Back in the crappie boom it seemed like a person could do no wrong when it came to fishing them. My wife and I did get a good number this spring though so lets hope for the best this coming winter.
Good to see Red balanced out more as a fishery, at least that is the perception form afar
Not much for balance. I’ve fished up there the last 5 years and my house has never seen a crappie. Not a species to specifically target.

I second that nomination! Cookie goes to great length’s to put his client’s on fish! Also he is just one hell of a nice guy.(Can I say hell here BK?) Another place that is equally as good as Cookie is the Waskish Minnow Station! Meeting somebody like Kelly P is something that everyone should experience once in their lifetime! I’m also in complete agreement with you in your assessment of the DNR! They really dropped the ball on URL. If the big crappie boom had continued and allowed to flourish, they would be installing traffic light’s in Waskish by now! Right? Of course, right! DIRTBALL2
I think another question that has to be asked is how many of those crappies are on the side that we cannot fish. On lower red lake there are many areas that are over thirty feet deep. Just because you don’t see them in the shallow areas that we can fish does not mean they still do not exist. Just a thought.
I would check out up north outfitters I met the owner last year, he was a really nice guy, I wasn’t even staying in a house and I was walking out and he told me to get in his samurai and he would take me to my spot…My buddy went back up the next weekend to stay and he said the houses were real nice and he gave him a heck of a deal…
At up north fish house rentals they will still be throwing out the great deals for early ice fishing. The sleeper houses will be set up on shore at Rogers resort for people to stay in while they use there portables during the day. Yes the suzuki samurai will be out in full force
What weekend can I plan (I know it’s not for sure) on good ice for ATV/UTV travel? Is it safe to guess on Dec. 14th weekend?
That time would be a pretty good bet.
The last few years walking out has started around Thanksgiving. I’m usually up between Christmas and New Years and full size truck and wheel houses are beginning to go out.

Actually it is rather sad. There is no balance. The Crappies have basically crashed and the walleye have taken over. The DNR really screwed up that one.
Was it a DNR screw up or 1000’s of guys pounding the he77 out of the lake weekend after weekend?
It looks like some cold weather for the upcoming forecast so we will be starting our early ice rentals on shore for 25 a bed the weekend after thanksgiving. Lets get u booked in. See u soon.
