I am starting to put together a plan for something I have never done before…..Fishing the reefs, islands and borderline areas in March.

If conditions and timing work out right I will go when my son, Tyler during spring break starting March 18th. We’ll make an adventure of it and run my 4-wheeler across.

It seems to me that the Long Point area is the most centrally located area whether going to Garden Island, the boarder area or west to the reefs. Is my logic sound?

In the Long Point area, I’m looking for a nice clean cabin to rent for our base during our stay. Which resort do you recommend using?

For the Long Point area I would Definitely stay at Long Point Resort. I personally stayed and fished out of there for 15 years. Family run. We always went the day after Christmas with my grandpa and relatives. Great memories

I’m unsure of your question, but I’m planning to guide my self/the group.

I do not intend to travel out that far alone.

They dont allow wheelers on the snowmobile trail and you will have to have conditions just right to get there on a wheeler.

By the 15th you should be able to take your wheeler out to the islands. If it was me I’d wait 2 weeks hook up the boat and lay the smack down on the Rainy.

We go up in March every years and depending on the weather & lake conditions wheelers may or may not work very well. Your best bet is to keep in touch with the resort you are staying at to get the most current conditions. There has only been 1 year that sleds wouldn’t have worked and we needed wheelers and there were a couple years that we had wheelers and should have had sleds.
They definitely frown on wheelers using the snowmobile trails, you’ll get ticketed if they see you doing it.
If there is any snow on the ice sleds is by FAR the better way to travel, faster, no concerns on fuel consumption and you can go anywhere.

Sorry, I did not see that you were going to take wheelers.

It’s a long trip out there, personally I would take a bomber out of the resort.

If you want to fish reefs and still take you wheelers to stay moblie, goto Arnensens resort, they have reefs close by there.

Though it’s fun, I’ve been there and done that. I now wait a few weeks later and spend my time sturgeon fishing.

Last year was ideal for running out there with wheelers just a long haul. This year it will be a normal year and i say you won’t be able too. There are some great options to fishing the reefs. We have always done good fishing the mud with in a mile of shore. Shoot me an email and i can give you some recommendations as to who i use to get me out on some fish and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg.Lodging is always the killer. This will be my 20th year going in march alone and using someone else.
