I just heard from a buddy that They don’t allow camping at Frontier landing. Is that true and if so, when did that happen? I didn’t go up last year, but we’d camped there for years prior to last year.

Camping at Frontier Landing

Yes, this is true. There were too many people/guides setting up fish houses or campers in the parking lots and leaving them there for weeks on end. I personally saw people park a long RV and park it the log ways so it took up 6 parking spots. They did the same with the fish houses.
I see the County’s point in getting rid of this type of camping, but saying no camping across the board really doesn’t seem fair to the people that just want to tent it. A tent doesn’t take any additional parking nor does just sleeping in your truck. This is going to ruin a lot of peoples plans. It always takes a couple selfish people to ruin it for everyone else. I’m curious as to what people will do now?

There’s always some douche out there willing to ruin it for everyone. The guy with the field behind the landing should rent out camp sites. Is Birchdale still open to camping?
March 11, 2010 at 7:49 pm #852358When did they change this? There were campers at Frontier last Spring and Fall….
As far as I know, you can still camp at Birchdale. There’s more room there and it doesn’t tie up any parking space like it does at Frontier.
March 11, 2010 at 7:57 pm #852365There is still parking at Birchdale but those will be full for the season after those same people that ruined camping get their rigs pulled in for the entire Spring Walleye run. They don’t care how long they take up those spots. Heck, I bet there are some campers and fish houses there already.

They posted a sign last spring that there would be no more camping at Frontier. They will be handing out tickets to anyone that does.
Got this e-mail from a friend.

Not the same. Camping is part of the experience. That and I’m cheap!March 11, 2010 at 8:22 pm #852382Quote:

Try getting a hotel on a 24hr notice… good luck. If you plan farther than that ahead you are really taking a gamble that the fish will be going. You have to go when the fish tell you to, not when there’s an opening at a hotel.
March 11, 2010 at 9:23 pm #852415Just drive the extra 12 miles out to Wheelers Pt and get a cabin at one of the resorts – usually about $30/night per person. Always plenty of them available…
March 11, 2010 at 10:35 pm #852469I second the cabin on wheelers. did that last year worked out great and they worked with us on a day to day notice.
March 12, 2010 at 2:18 am #852602We get a cabin every year – got a place to fry fish and kick back with the extra room….
March 15, 2010 at 1:17 am #853533I am both spoiled and a bit biased as I only live forty minutes from Frontier but I am glad they put the kibosh on it. Last year I was amazed how badly the access was plugged up with RVs and fishouses, it was getting a bit out of hand. Plus the area is plum full of lodging, campgrounds and other facilities with much nicer amenities. What really soured me is I was through before the river even opened up and guys already had rigs pulled to hold spots.
March 15, 2010 at 11:04 pm #853842I agree Jonny. The RV’s and fish houses were horrible last year. I have to ask you this though, what would it hurt if someone slept in their truck or set up a tent? There’s been tents around there for years and they don’t take up any extra parking. Saying no camping screws those people over. Or as I usually do, come up late 1:00-2:00 and throw the boat in and catch a few
in the truck before I head out. All I’m doing is making less congestion in the moring unloading my boat.
So even though I’m glad the RV’s and fish houses will be gone, it’s too bad the guys that weren’t hurting a thing got the boot too. It seems like someone took the easy route and just said no camping instead of targeting the real issue.
March 16, 2010 at 5:21 pm #854167Sadly that is how it went down, I admire the guys in the tents, now thats hardcore. I feel a time/size limit should have been placed length of stay; say 48 hours per single place or unit. That would help the flow for sure and would have prevented the rvs and shacks from sitting there for weeks on end. I was up everyday for two weeks and I know for sure one shack was only uses during the weekends but never moved the enitire time and was placed befoe ice out.
