After several years of going to LOTW and doing the house rental with limited success I’m ready to venture off on my own. Can any one offer me any advice as to where to stay, fish, etc. via snowmobile. It seems every year back at the lodge I hear how people have had better success on their own. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Butch

We like to find lodging around the Long Point area.

That way its in between the rock reefs to the west or the areas to the north and east like Garden Island and Knights and Bridges.

Get a Lakemaster chip with one foot contours. Worth the money if you don’t have it.

Make sure the gas tank is full. The sleds work harder pulling tubs and gear. Especially in slushy conditions.

If the lake is rough you can find marked and groomed snowmobile trails running east west along the south shore of the lake.

You can run the Bomber trails with snowmobiles. You can usually see where they stake them out. They typically lead to structure of some sort.

Going cross country is an adventure but you have to be prepared and take it easy. Your gear can get the crap beat out of it.

You can get on some great bites getting out early and staying away from the crowds.

We generally stay away from areas that they plow roads to. Its a big lake with lots of areas to fish with just your own group.

Yup, grab the lakemaster Rainy /LOTW chip it runs $100 if you are going to try to fish the reefs. Bridges and knight are about a 25mi ride. Or you might want the chip if you are going to fish the structure on the west side of the lake (from long point eastward)
If you are making the run to the reefs be smart and take 2 sleads, trust me breakdown do happen. If you are just going to fish the east basin off of pine island the chip is not really needed, it is just a gradual sloping bowl topping out at about 34 feet. Im not sure if Sportsmans has their Oak Island location open in winter but that might be a place to look into. You can get a room out by the reefs and make it an adventure.
The rental houses are a gamble, iv done well and ive done [censored]. But 9 time out of 10 i make my own runs and have great success. It is an easy lake to fish.
Out of Pine Island starting now you can bet on 20-24′ deep and i just generally progressivley move a foot deeper every week or two through-out the season till mid march then start coming back shallower. Late march early april provides AWSOME fishing out of the Light house Gap as the fish move into the river.

They do, and our group will be staying there in less than two weeks

Our first trip to the NW angle after so many Wigwam trips – should be fun!!
