Matt and I went up to Rainy River during Halloween weekend and had a blast. I am pretty new to fishing but enjoyed the time being up in such a beautiful area. While it was a bit rainy on rainy river we actually kept very warm in Matt’s boat. Luckily we could put the cover up and stay very warm. Matt made a good point while we were up there. He mentioned that since we didn’t have to be so bundled up with gloves, lots of layers of clothing… it probably helped us catch a lot more fish as we were jigging. When you get so bundled up it can become quite restrictive and I would say hinder you to some degree in catching walleye. This weekend especially since the walleye had such a soft bit. You can check out the short YouTube video of the largest fish we caught that weekend which was a 29″.

I have to give the credit to Matt for knowledge and years of experience he has in catching walleye. It’s amazing how much there is to know about fishing. I am sure that is something realized by most people on this forum but it is amazing to think that so much knowledge does go into learning how to fish.
It was also great to be able to be in a natural setting for conversation and contemplation. It was a nice to be able to relax from the normal work week. One parallel that I like to think of when fishing is just that Jesus called Simon and Andrew while fishing to come with me. He taught them the good news that this life is more than just a job, being successful, or catching the best fish! He came to give life –life to the fullest. When I am out fishing and in nature it really makes me think about the perspective of life and what is really important. It truly is living for the one true God.
I really hope that this is the first of many very enjoyable fishing experiences. So many fish and so little time! Hopefully next time we will have a video shot of Matt and/or I pulling in the fish! That would be fun to catch on tape!
