I didn’t think I was ever going to make it up there this summer, but I squeeked in a quick trip this week.
On Thursday the winds were light so we decided to put some miles on and find a bunch of fish. There were some fish here and there on the reefs just off Rocky Pt. and those 5 or 6 miles out. Scouting the open area between the reefs was showing very little sign of life as well. We opted to head to the Western shoreline and thats where we found that “bunch” of fish we were going for. The key depth was the 17-21′ shoreline break. I started out fast with leadcore, then slowed to pulling spinners, then a jig, and finally a rig. I caught fish on everything, but for the number down there I expected to be catching more. Between the 2 boats we managed a nice limit, but we worked for them.
Friday brought strong West/NW winds, so we loaded the boats and headed to the Springsteel landing. A short boat ride had us on the same spot as the day before. The fish were there again and this time happy to take our crankbaits. For 4 hours we popped a fish every 5-10 minutes with multiple doubles. Granted majority of the fish were 8-12″ walleyes and saugers, every 3rd or 4th fish was a nice 15-18″ walleye for the box. With only 2 guys in the boat I run my 9’6″ rods and I love the way they double over everytime a fish hits. Gets the blood pumping. Odds on favorite for this trip was gold colored crankbaits. We trolled mainly around 2 mph, but rarely got bit at much over 2.1. My Uncle opted to pull blades through these same areas. They weren’t catching them nearly as fast, but also managed to fill the box in a few hours. They said they had a hard time hooking the fish and had alot come off. Something interesting is in this picture the fish to the left were our fish and the ones on the right were theres. I guess we were catching the nicer ones.
