Alright guys!! I haven’t been fishing the river hard this fall due to rapidly fluctuating water levels which seemed to mess with the shinner run early. After getting my lake guide boat winterized and starting to organize my ice stuff I decided to hit the Rainy river for a little first hand information on the stage of the bite. My good friend and I headed out at 4pm and limited out on fat walleyes by 6pm. My buddy fished with a jig and minnow, and I fished with multiple colors of Kgrubs and precision heads in the 3/8 oz size. The Kgrubs were the ticket. I like the oyster colored one the best, and so did the walleyes. Long casting and slow pumping got smashing hits!! 5 walleyes between 23-25 inches. Definately LOTW walleyes and not resident fish. Didn’t see signs of Shinners jumping on shorelines, but these fish obviously are either chasing or looking for baitfish. Does it really matter?? Actually I would prefer the Eyes come in chasing Shinners that aren’t there. Will definately create a good bite!! As always fishing in the crowds will often leave you with lackluster days and reports. All we have heard as of late was poor poor poor results. River levels are nice right now, and clarity is improving greatly. Couple those two things with some stability in the weather and LIGHTS OUT!!
DO NOT GO WITHOUT A NICE SELECTION OF PLASTICS!!! KGRUBS seem to match what they are looking for and are creating the right action in the current. My buddy is a good stick, and was outfished with plastics, and trust me I didn’t let him know about it Remember this as I’ve always said sometimes Plastics will outfish meat. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE TIMES!! The river is definately known for a great plastics bite Spring and Fall. I suspect Paddletails and ringworms will also be effective, but wasn’t willing to take my Kgrub out of the water long enough to find out!! LOL!! Good Fishing Boys!! Oh alomost forgot, but yes Orange and Chartruesse Firetiger Precisions in 3/8 oz. Is there anything else?? LOL!!
