One of the most highly anticipated events of every walleye fishermans year is about ready to roll. Shoreline ice is merely feet from the landing at Birchdale, and with the forecast “Should” be ready to roll by this weekend. Temps in the 40’s and high wind have beat up the stubborn ice. Reports are people have been slipping little river boats over the ice and catching some nice fish.
Cross your fingers for a a continued slow melt so we don’t upset the Big Fork or Little Fork rivers. This would make for poor fishing. If things stay as it is with no heavy rainy or real warm temps look for some Super Freaks to be boated!
If you haven’t ever fished this deal then “What the heck are you thinking” LOL! I’ve always said catching trophy fish is 99% dependant on 3 variables. Number one is fishing waters with trophy fish, and number two is timing, number 3 is being spot on spot. This is the time for a MONSTER! Yep it is still a bit of a roll of the dice with nobody really able to predict Mother nature including 99% of meteorologists. You could roll snake eyes….. My suggestions would be to load your boat, and throw your auger and ice gear along. Heck you’ll where the same clothes anyway. If the river is right you will have the best fishing of your walleye fishing career. If not you’ll be able to lay the wood to giant pike and crappies. In all honesty I haven’t been able to pull my crappie fishing clan away from those 2LB slabs, but a 32 inch football is calling my name. Fireball multi-color jigs in the 3/8 to 1/2 oz will be all you need.
Hope to see you guys down there!!!
