Well, a group of nine of my pals and I made a trip to LOW for some eye jerkin’, drinkin’ and card playing fun this past weekend. We brought portables, wheelers and a bunch of excited guys who don’t fish more than once or twice a winter if they are lucky. Boy did they get a wake up call when they peered out the door of the ice houses on Saturday morning!!
We played cards until around 3:00am and I woke up at around 6:00 to what I thought was the ice cracking from a ways away and heading our way. Well, it was not the ice cracking, it was the hardest wind that I have seen blow on that lake in 13 years! It was a total white-out when I opened the door to look outside!
What do you do in a situation like this?? Well, first you try and out a few walleyes and have some and breakfast, then you let mother nature know what you think of her after ruining your day of fishing in the portables. After that you basically either take a or you with the guys and play cards all day, which is what we chose to do a little of each!
On Saturday evening around 7:00 or so the guys from Adrian’s resort plowed a road to us to check if we were alright, to them for that! We told them that we had plenty of and sent them on their way ! Sunday, the road that was plowed to us no longer existed and we blazed a very well chosen trail to get back to the main ice roads. Chevrolet, gas engine, started and ran well for the very cold (-60windchill)weather we were having, but the Ford diesel was a different story. After barely making it off the lake the truck jelled up and I had to pull him and the fish house into Baudette to the Cenex/Mc Donalds store. What a great group of people there!! They let my buddy pull his truck into the shop, change the fuel filter and let things warm up for an hour. All this for the price of the two fuel filters, one changed there and the other to take along as a spare. Great people at this store ! If you need food, gas or propane, I highly recommend these folks !!
We left for home around 10:00am yesterday and arrived home at 7:30 last night.
The fishing was really slow for us, but we did manage 5 nice keepers for the guys who don’t fish much!
Below are a few pics of the drifting and the limited visibility. Not the greatest fishing weekend at all, but we all had a great time and we made it out with no real damage!
