Well I made it back from my first downrigging trip to Lake of the Woods.
We fished all day on Friday and Saturday. We did not have the storms like you guys had around here.
The wind on the other hand made it pretty interesting on the water. You definatly have to be a bit of a “sea dog” to handle this big water.
I heard alot of chatter on the radio from other people that they were brining people back to the shore.

We fished out of Long Point and headed over to gull rock staying in 30 to 34 feet of water.
Our best color was a transperent Purple or Blue rapala.
I am not sure if I am ready to re-rig my boat yet but it was definatly something that everyone should try.
There were two groups of us that went and for the group our biggest was 29 1/4, 28 and 26 1/2.
We released a good mess of 20 some inchers also.
We also had plenty of fish to bring home.

Some people labeled downrigger fishing as cheating but I am still trying to figure that out?

I also notice two different boats vertical fishing with a bottom bouncer and a 3ft lindy rig?
That just doesn’t sit right in my mind….can anyone explain?

It also looks like it Ditch burning time. Quite a site to see……

Not sure what you need explained on the rigging (unless you are anti-rigging ).

Lindy-Rigging is used to slow down the presentation when you are locating fish below you. Fish have more time to see the bait and investigate. I use this for either light bites or during aggressive feeding times. You can also quickly change up your live bait to find what they are biting on… switching up between minnows, leaches and crawlers. If you have a few people in the boat, all 3 can use different live bait to find what the eyes prefer that particular day. Rigging definately has it’s advanatages at times.

With down-rigging, you cover a lot of space in a little time… This is usually the most productive method during the daytime hours where the eye’s are not moving in on prey and usually produces a reaction strike.

Thanks for the report. I’ll be up at Arnesen’s Thursday-Monday doing some downrigging. Last year was my first year downrigging LOTW and I am hooked. Drop the lead, crack a beer, and reel em in. I’ve got the rigging and blading rods along, but hopefully it doesn’t come to that.

Ahh… I re-read what you wrote. You are correct, doesn’t make sense to me to use a bottom bouncer and 3ft snell… Are you sure it wasn’t a drift sock instead of an anchor rope?

Both people had a hand thrown bouy out on the reef and never moved off of it so Yes I am pretty sure it wasnt a drift sock. I know that Long Point is known for turbulant water so it is a chance that it just flows………
