Well,
Despite uncooperative ice conditions myself and 2 others decided to head up to fish Rainy River this past weekend. (We already had plans, and changing dates wasn’t an option) So we stayed in I-Falls and fished out of Pelland on Friday. Pelland was really slow for everyone, but the first (and only fish I boated for the day) was a pig of a walleye. The big girl came in at 31″ long with a 20″ girth. After catching that I really didn’t care if I caught another fish at all. On Saturday we chose to fish out of I-Falls and go up to the dam in search of deeper water. The deepest we found around Pelland was 10 feet with most being 5-6 FOW. Once we made our way through the rocks and got to the dam we were able to start catching walleyes nearly right away. The biggest Problem was that they were coming out of 50-60FOW and that is quite hard on the fish. Of all the boats there, the biggest I know of being caught at the dam was 19.5″ In the morning we managed to boat around 10 small eyes, and then elected to anchor and fish sturgeon in the afternoon. That went ok, each of my fishing partners managed to boat a sturgeon. One came in at 36″ and the other at 24″. Those small ones are pretty neat looking fish. On Sunday morning we were able to put in at Franz Jevne, but didn’t manage to catch anything in the 2 hours before we went home. The river was pretty muddy at this point, With a Orange/yellow H2O Jig and a chartruese/orange core ringworm water clarity was less than a foot.
But all in all, we had a good time and it was great to be out in the boat again. I managed to boat my second 31″+ fish, so now I have specs for 2 replica’s (as soon as I convince my wife I need 1 let alone 2 in the house!)
To everyone who is heading up, good luck to you all.
And yes the water is extremely low, so be on the lookout for rocks and such
