My Uncle and I fished Saturday-Tuesday around the Rocky Point area. This was the first time ice fishing up there for both of us, so we decided to follow the neighbors to 12 Mile Reef. We fished 11am-5pm catching only 10 small walleyes and sauger. On Sunday we fired up the X-26 with the LOTW mapping chip and headed out to find our own fish. I found a very nice steep bank from 24-31 feet. We set up in 30 feet right on the edge. From 12-4 the fishing was great. Walleyes, sauger, and perch were hitting our shinners and rainbows. On Monday we moved off the edge about 30 yards. The fishing was great again with a lot of very nice 16-19 inch walleyes coming in. The saugers were also much nicer at around 15 inches. I caught my personal best 19″ sauger too. We fished the same general area again Tuesday with the same success. For the most part we just practiced catch and release, but a few eelpout weren’t so lucky. 2pm was prime time every day. The bait of choice was a Red Buckshot Rattle spoon. I tried gold, chart., and silver with limited success. The gold and red Go Devils produced some lookers, but few takers. Our set lines caught about half the fish. So where are the fish? In 28-32 fow away from other people. Arnesen’s runs a very nice operation. We never used their houses, but the guides and the people behind the counters are very nice. The food is excellent too. I will be back up there Thurs.-Mon. trying to guide a group of 7 unexperienced anglers.
