Had the opportunity to fish for Sturgeon for the first time earlier this week with two other members from the Northerm Minnesota League of guides, Tim Dorholt and Jeff Sundin. Put in in International Falls and headed up to the damn. Set up just off the current and got ready for some fast action. Did get a picture of the largest sturgeon caught but having technical difficulty with posting it so will have to just tell you the story.

Jeff and Tim had already made two trips to the Rainy. This first trip they caught 20 and the second trip they caught 25 but nothing over 50 inches. With that kind of bite the previous trips, we were looking forward a great time. We were all set up with baitcasters, braided line, mono leaders, 2/0 straight hooks and nightcrawlers. I put some BANG craw scent on my offering. Would’t you know, the first fish this basshead catches is a small mouth bass about 3 1/2 pounds. After some ribbing I caught the first sturgeon, which was only about 26″ long. I ended up catching 5 sturgeon, the small mouth, a rock bass and an ellpout. Jeff caught three sturgeon and Tim blanked. We did see some nice sturgeon roll on the surface.

I think we were still a little early ofor the good bite. We are thinking of another run to Rainy the first week in May. Think we will try 4 mile bay.

If you haven’t seen the post at the top of the page…take a looky see.

I’ve sent you a pm with an email address to send the photo…it’s easy once you’ve done it.

You would think the DNR could poison the lake to get rid of those things!

my wife and ijust got back tonight. we fished testerday from 1:00pm till 5:30pm and caught 5, 4 small ones, 18″ to about 25″ and a 45″. there were 9 boats fishing, we seen about 25 to 30 fish caught around us by the other boats. most fish were on the smaller side, but we did see 5 or so caught that were real pole benders. we did not fish this morning, it was raining pretty good. only 1 boat went out this morning, and that wasn’t till about 10:30am. we stayed at wigwam resort and it was nice. they are looking foward to seeing all the IDAers this weekend. i hope that the bigger ones bite better on monday and tuesday. we did stop at red on the way home. wow, what a launch the dnr put in, all tar and concrete 2 laner. the crappies were not bitting, but the walleyes were so we left…………….tom fellegy

Coming from the west, turn left at the hamberger joint (Burger King?). Follow the road to the ramp (right side) There is a dock and paved ramp. You have to park across the street from the landing but no big deal. Then go up the river to the damn (1 mile)

Steve and Brian, thanks for the help and sorry for the confusion on the post. I’ll get my act together soon.
