Well..this isn’t as much a report as it is an admission of failure.
Heidi and I ventured to LOTW Sat 12/31, we left Plymouth in the wee hours of the morning so we could get some time on the ice Sat afternoon. We got up there and checked in and off we went. We asked at the hotel and the bait shop…deep 24 – 28 feet….wait shallow 12-18’…we had sleds and a portable we figured we would try it all and we did.
Sat afternoon we started out in 28′ out past pine island and picked up 1 nice fat 15.5″ sauger, then moved in to 16′ for the later afternoon bite…I drilled a few holes and kinda jumped around from 14 – 18′ while Heidi guarded the portable….with the heater. Nothing…only marked a couple with no takers.
Sun morning we were up early and thought we would give shallow another shot so we set up off the west end of Pine Island in the Morris gap in about 15′ of water…..1 walleye at a whole 6 inches…we laughed as it rested comfortably across the 8″ hole with room to spare before heading back to the bottom. Then we moved over off Long Point in about 22 feet of water…nothing…didn’t even mark a fish, we had heard the water was too murky but figured we couldn’t do any worse.
For Sun afternoon we thought we would try something new since we had heard inside pine island in 4 Mile Bay people had been catching fish. If you have never done this be prepared to fish in current….we weren’t but Heidi did get a nice 16″ walleye on a salmo chubby darter and I had my brand new salmo bit cleanly off 10 minutes after putting it on….oh well $7 down the drain.
This morning we were going to get up early and get some heavy jigs and try 4 mile bay again but Heidi had a nasty sinus thing going on so we tucked our tails between our legs and headed home.
One thing we found out Sun night was that you needed to be as far east as you could get to find the cleaner water, a bomber driver at Sportsmans was kind enough to share that tid bit with us…but we didn’t make it out today so it didn’t matter.
I did see one group that had probably 12-14 fish in a cooler that drove out Adrians road and just went to the right(towards Canadian waters) in 26 feet…BUT…I don’t think a single fish in their cooler would have made 14″ some probably not even 12″….but they did catch some fish….so they one upped me there. Oh well ya can’t get them every time ya go.
We had a blast though and have already made reservations for March 23-26 to head back up again.

PS..In case anyone is wondering…it was Heidi 3 John 0.
She got the only 3 fish we caught all weekend. I drilled holes and hole hopped all over the place….just wasn’t my weekend.
