Well guys……looks like we might be throwing together a last minute trip to the Rainy next weekend . My buddy has a cabin right in birchdale, so with free lodging, we’ve just gotta give it a run

But anywho, my question is in regards to bait. I’m assuming most do the jig and minnow thing……Where do you usually get them from? are there bait shops around? Does anyone take minnows with them from home?

    will salted fatheads work?

When we were there last fall the bait of choice was shiners I believe you should find them in the local bait shops. I know the locals use frozen shiners and most bait shops have these as well. I think you should enjoy this trip what a fishery

We where in Baudette just a few days ago. The bait shop next to holiday was out of shiners. He commented that no one else around had them either. After buy some rainbows from him we went to Adrians to get on the lake and they had shiners. I would say either contact someone up there to make sure they have bait or else bring it up yourself. Then you know you have it.

    alright….next question

I think were gonna try to bring the bait from home……so how much are we going to need? (2 guys for 2 1/2 days of fishing)

if hundred fish days are not un-common…..well, that’s a lot of shinners

I’m well stocked on plastics, so we’ll probably be giving them a fair try also, but if we’re going through the effort we want to be well prepared.

When we were up there, the guide would not let us hook the minnows through the lips. In the mouth, out the gill, and up through the back. 7 of us caught over 400 walleyes in the 2 boats that day and we saved a ton of money on bait for the guides.
