I would agree that as soon as you can launch a boat is probably the best time to go, ALTHOUGH, the longer you wait typically you will catch better numbers of big fish. We’ve been doing a trip now for several years and if you go as soon as Birchdale is open you will get good to great numbers, but the big pigs will be more isolated. On a few of the trips where we went later and the river had not “muddied” up we absolutely pounded the fish, with a lot of pigs in the mix. I think one of the big factors is how much snow is on the ground. If there is alot of snow on the ground, there is the potential for a lot of runoff. On these years it is safer to go early. On years where there is little to no snow, it may be worth the risk of waiting longer. Small rains will muddy the river for a day or two, but fishing still isn’t that bad. I have to tell you this is just about one of the hardest trips to plan. In fact I started giving my wife and work a 4-week span and told them I’ll be gone sometime in that window. If anybody can figure this one out and hit it right every year, they are a genious. My party will be up on April 2nd – 6th (I can’t get there until the 4th because of a WWA tourney), let us know how you do.
