I just spit coffee all over the keyboard and monitor. That is a real monster, wow.

Again, working for IDO isn’t all bad.
We spent two days up there last week. Day 1 we were in search mode and everyone fished. Day 2 we shot the show and Ben was behind the camera. Both days produced a bite to remember with many, many big fish found in shallow water.

I have to agree with that….90% of the time he is a slave driver but 4 days out of the week he lets up…
Awesome pike, but I think that picture looks really odd, or you guys are in a new Skeeter that’s like 12 feet wide.
Look at Ben’s waist, I’m not saying Ben’s a big guy, but he’s not Richard Simmons either. Anyways, from where the picture is taken, with Ben being a couple feet from the transom, he should be blocking about HALF of the boat(look at the 2nd picture in the story to see what I’m talking about). I don’t have the specs in front of me, but looking at the back of a Skeeter MX2025 there is what, a 2-3 feet between the side of the motor and the outside edge of the transom?
http://boats.iboats.com/2013-skeeter-boats-mx-2025/1399489.html for reference.
In that picture it looks like there is about ‘Three Ben’s width’ between the edge of the motor and the edge of the boat, and that’s with him standing like 2 feet closer to the camera than the transom is.
Am I the only one seeing this? Maybe it’s some trick photography or something. I didn’t see it mentioned in the article, how long was that pike?
Absolutely beautiful pike, but something doesn’t quite add up with that picture…
No trickery at all. If you’d like to examine the RAW files we’ll send them to you. Just shoot me over an email address and you can pour over that file to your heart’s content. I’m 6’4 X 230 lbs… I can only wish that the fish I caught looked like that in pics.
PS – You’re over thinking things. Of course the offer to send the RAW file for your inspection stands. And if Ben and Richard were to throw down, my money would be on Richard.
That first fish deserves a “whoa.” It was something pretty special. And don’t worry about asking questions about our photos. We don’t mess around with them so we’ve got nothing to hide. Plus we’re better fisherman than photgraphers so I think the “blind squirrel” saying applies here.
Why does the one pic look bigger than the other. Well, the first fish is a lot bigger than the second. Beyond that it could be anything from lens used, angle, composition…or just plain dumb luck.
As for the size of that fish I honestly don’t recall the dimensions. Shoot Ben an email or PM. He’ll gladly share the tale of the tape.
To tell you the truth I don’t think we ever measured the fish. I can tell you the first picture is taken on a DSLR with a focal length of 20-22mm and the second picture is on a cell phone with the lens having a focal length of around 30mm. So you’re going to get a little wider angle which will distort the picture a little bit. You would really see things get crazy with say a fish eye lens which would make the fish look like it’s about 100 inches, but if you look at the horizon it would also be curved. So you’ll see the horizon is pretty straight so there is no trickery going on.
If you’re implying there was some Photoshop action going on, rest assured I am very mediocre at photoshop, I’d have to send the picture to our design guy, who would probably laugh at me and then fall back into Z-space.
and the fish in the first picture compared to the second picture would be like comparing a house cat vs. a lion, the first fish is much bigger.
I think part of the confusion here is in the first picture you see the kicker motor and in the second you see the much larger main motor. Basically pic 1 big fish small motor, second picture “small” fish , big motor. Just an observation.

Good catch. I didn’t think of or notice that. When I look at those pics all I see is fish. Even Ben is barely there.

I think you’re right!
It’s all making sense now.

Definitely that is what the difference is in the pictures.
Not even a nibble.
When I say he’s long arming it, I am not saying it is a not a big, big pike. Nor am I being critical.
Dang, I thought for sure that James guy would bite.

I left my teeth on the nightstand.
Had the motor in the first picture been the big motor though, I think I was right in saying it’s probably about a 12 foot wide boat :).
I will say that long arming a 40+” northern is every bit as impressive as catching one, holding a squirming 25lb fish out like that while my fishing partner fiddles with his iPhone is usually not possible. I would probably have that ‘bou’ in my forearm before the picture was taken :).

This^^^
Pic #1, the Yamaha is probably being confused as the main motor and looks fairly small in relation to the boat and the fish, making both appear huge… however if you look closely, 85% of the transom is in the pic minus a few inches of the port side. Mind games!
Nice fish, James, and a big thanks to you and the rest of the IDO Staff for sharing your knowledge with us.
