Can you fish the Rainy River without an Ontario License and RABC? If things don’t turn that may be the only open water when we head up that way in May.

Yes you can. You’ll just have to stay on the American half of the river.

The “border” is an imaginary line open to interpretation. It is NOT down the center of the river. We have never had an issue, but a Canadian Officer can (and will) nail a person if they think they crossed the line.
April 17, 2013 at 1:31 pm #1163335They sure will nail ya, we were cited $155 tickets for being 50′ over the centerline. If you see a small craft heading toward you it’s advised to motor over the our side if your close to middle of channel as they cannot tag you unless they make boat to boat contact and mark the current position. Lesson learned the Queen
April 17, 2013 at 2:31 pm #1163350I heard some lucky fishermen this past weekend on Rainy, over on the candaian side w/o RABC. Luckly only the wardens stopped them and not a memeber of immigration or it would have been up to a $1000 fine and seizure of the boat. Second hand info told to me, might be more to the story, but if you can get a RABC get one! They are cheap. If you can’t get one, then i would invest in a chip that shows where the border is.
Better to be safe than sorry

Why are Canadians such pricks about this?
They are nice and allow us to fish/enter Canada, I am not 100% sure how canadians fish the American side of the river? I don’t know if there is a process like an RABC for canadians to fish american side?
machinePosts: 98April 17, 2013 at 7:15 pm #116349250 feet over the centerline is pretty far over, isn’t it? The river isn’t that wide up there. We saw most people getting stopped who were obviously well onto the Canadian side. If you apply for a RABC pass do you have to have check into Canada or could you just put your boat into the water on US side and fish the Canadian side? Can you also apply for a fishing license through mail/online?
April 17, 2013 at 7:59 pm #1163507Once you’ve got your RABC and Ont. permit you can just go back and forth of the line (pretty sure you can’t go on land though) if I recall correctly.
RABC shouldn’t be an issue for me and my wife, my parent have never gotten one and would probably balk at the idea of spending another 30 bucks plus Ont. license, unless it really still is iced up on the lakes when we get there.
If you go into fort Frances can you get an RABC over the counter? I’ve only ever gotten mine by mail.
April 17, 2013 at 8:07 pm #116351150 feet is alot by looking at 2 ice and snow covered shorelines?? Check your chip and follow the centerline, you can clearly see that it’s not in the middle 100% of time. With the water levels lower it all changes.. 50 ft IMO is pretty tough to judge by eye with the wind pounding you into Canada. BS law, should be shore to shore like it used to be…
April 17, 2013 at 9:52 pm #1163529I personally watched 3 boats get hit by Canandian Fish and Wildlife last weekend. They were working it hard last weekend. I heard 2nd hand $450 for the boat for fishing without Canadian liscense and said they could have charged them the $1000/person for illegal border crossing but let them go. Small red Lund. They cruised on US side them vered hard into Canadian waters to make the bust each time.

Yes on the red Lund, we saw them working the river. They were also in a plain, silver Alumarine, totally plainclothes. They would be on the Canadian side pretending to be catching fish. When they attracted a boat or two that ventured too far across the river, they would drop the hammer on the unsuspecting guys. I suppose those guys should have known better, but that is pretty slippery of the Canadians to pull that. Anything for a pinch, that is really underhanded. The fish had lockjaw pretty much all over the river. It surely was a departure from the knockout fishing last spring. Well, maybe May will be better….

Cal, did you hit the river last week & how did you guys do? I pitched blades, pitched plastics, vertical jigged blades, vertical jigged meat, with scant success. We were on fish, but it was a really light bite. Sometimes you would just feel a weight & set the hook. I never had one fish really slam it. Oh well, there’s always next year….
April 18, 2013 at 10:15 am #1163596What is a RABC? Is that a license we can get?
I still say they are pricks from what I am reading.
Wasn’t there controversy up there a few years back over differing management practices, limits and what not?
I think I’ll crank some South Park Blame Canada up there while burning a red maple leaf flag.
Ok, seriously, so if you get slapped with a fine and don’t plan on visiting Canada anytime soon, what would be the problem with not paying?
Lastly, they can’t cross the line in there boat to ticket or arrest someone, can they?
When they were incognito, were they frying back bacon in their boat, wearing tuques and parkas while drinking Molson and finishing every sentence with an, “eh”?
To my fellow Canadian IDOers, I tease. I love Canada and Canadians.

The bite was definately off but we still managed to put together a few decent days. 56 fish on Friday and 40 on Saturday. Slow fishing was the key. 1/4oz with mini pulse r’s in white was the ticket. We had violent strikes all weekend, very rare was it just dead weight. Caught fish pitching and dragging. Biggest fish was 27.5″ for our boat, lots of males mixed with 20-23 inch females.
April 18, 2013 at 2:30 pm #1163671Ontario Non resident Fishing License
Ontario allows you to do the license thing online while other provinces like manitoba you have to fax in for a license or in person. Either way simple process and much easier that having to follow some imaginary line which represents an International border.
April 19, 2013 at 11:47 pm #1164115Yes you can get an RABC at the customs office in Ft. Frances. If you’re closer to Baudette you can also get it at customs in Rainy River.
April 20, 2013 at 10:52 am #1164169Thanks, really don’t think it will come to this, but with my wife’s work and my parents summer schedule we cannot move our week even if the resort offers too if somehow there is still ice on 5-18 (Kabetogama). The long range models say a warm up is comming, but they’ve been saying that in the extended forecast since about late febuary it seems and its yet to come true.
