This trip has been deemed the “Girls Trip” for the last couple years. It’s a time that we can bring up our wives to beautiful Lake of the Woods and show them the excellent fishing that it has to offer. Of course it’s still fishing and with some of the reports that I was getting I was very worried about the outcome.

Our trip started at 2am Friday morning and it was -15 at my place. Ouch! That’s just plain cold packing and repacking so things didn’t freeze on the way up. Little did we know that 5 hours later it was going to be -31 and things were going to freeze anyway! When we hit Baudette we had our traditional sit down breakfast, fueled the vehicle and grabbed a few forgotten items to spread some wealth among the town. In no time we were at Long Point Resort talking with Kelly and Barry checking in and discussing the fish plan. Things had been generally slow since the last time I was up and they had moved a house out east that they want my group to try. Off we went.

We were in around 32 feet of water and started off with dead sticks and corks. Much to my surprise we were catching right away! Tough thing was we were on the small side of things. I can’t say how many 9” fish would zoom by the nice ones and just hammer a jigging spoon. Things stayed steady all Friday and it was pretty easy to get enough to put a one person limit in the freezer and eat the rest. There is just no way to explain how good they taste from the lake to the fry pan!

Day 2 brought us back to the same area fishing the same way. My wife actually had 3 fish in the bucket before I even put a line down. The fish on Saturday came more in streaks but the quality was better. Nothing to brag about but all great eaters! We were again surprised by a nice 28” northern that hit a slender spoon and put up a great fight for Vince’s wife Kathie.

All that said or go to lures were again smaller jigs that glowed, (demons), things with a single eye and a glow back. Jigging is a hand’s down 1/4oz Slender spoon in either gold or the silver. I will let you in on a secret; the next lure to take its place is a flutter fish put out by PK lures. Get it in the glow with red dot. This company is making a huge impact in MN and you are starting to see them everywhere in small qty’s. Ask for them at your local store.

    Enjoy the pics!
