The earliest I have been out on LOW was first weekend in December, but that was a cold year and we were ice fishing on smaller lakes during Thanksgiving that year.

I remember ice fishing around thanksgiving as well. Seems like recent years we are lucky to get out before xmas.

I’ve got to think that if I have been ice fishing around the metro on Thanksgiving that at least parts of LOTW would have been good to go. Maybe not though?

Earliest for me was December 1st 2010 on 4″ of ice on the backwaters around Stevens Point, WI…

We book a trip to LotW 2 weekends before Christmas each year. We have always gotten out with ATVs. But two recent years our trip was not confirmed until a few days before the scheduled arrival due to lack of ice. On Mille Lacs I have driven a truck on Cove bay Thnksgiving weekend twice in the last 20 years.

I want to say that I’ve been out on Thanksgiving, even down here in the Northeast Iowa/Southwest Wisconsin area. The backwaters of the Miss always get ice on them pretty early. Sturgeon Slough in Prairie and Bussey Lake, north of Guttenberg, are both early ice spots. Also, Clear Lake is usually ready to go fairly early in the year.

We do the same thing every year, two weeks before Christmas but any chance I can get to get out on LOW during that early ice period I will take it. Awesome fishing if you can get up there for that first week of ice fishing. Although some years you have to really watch the weather if you get strong winds the ice conditions can go bad in short amount of time since the main lake still has a lot of open water.

I have heard (in a video) that Dave Genz traditionally finds ice and fishes each Thanksgiving day (MN?).

Earliest I have been on ice was November 9th up here in Northern WI. Traditionally though I would say sometime around Thanksgiving for us as well!!!
