    Hello

After many members advice, my father in law and I are taking my terminally ill (cancer) nephew Matt to LOTW fishing for a few days. We are staying at a resort at the head of the river and plan on hitting the big lake for walleye. This will be our first time up there during open water season. If any of you would be willing to share advice/tips it would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to PM me. Thank you for your thoughts and help.

I haven’t been up there for a month otherwise I would be happy to give you information. The AIM tournament starts on Thursday and I’m sure those anglers would provide you with information after the tournament. Feel free to PM me if interested and I will you give you a phone number for a couple of them. The resorts are good at providing current information as well.

As of early August there was a large school of fish east of long point a few miles and from roughly three to eight miles north of morris point 30-34 fow. We had the most success with down riggers and lead core running white x rap sticks and shads and the blue x-rap shallow stick. A lot of colors caught fish. Those were just the best. We ran our lures down in the bottom couple feet of the water column. Bouncers with spinners and crawlers should also get bit. My favorites blades are firetiger, Gold or Seyka perch, white, Glow, pink/white, metallic red, red/gold, Chartruese. Also if the weather permits there should be fish relating to the reefs. The most reefs are over near arneson’s resort or up towards Garden/Knights/Bridges island. The wind will dictate how far you can travel depending on the size of your boat. It’s big water out in the basin. Get your hands on a lakemap chip for the lake if you can.

If you plan on doing some down rigging you can always follow the charter boats otherwise the best technique I use when rigging to get away from the crowds is look for groups of pelicans sitting on the water. The pelicans are usually where the bait fish are in the middle of the lake and there is always fish there. This theory of mine has yet to be proven wrong in five trips there this summer. Also, I usually do really well jigging right in the Gap with a charteuse jig and shiners. Otherwise, head to the reefs I have heard they had been doing really well jigging and trolling spinners by long point.

Thank you for the advice everyone! Is there a much of a walleye bite on the river this time of year if the wind is howling?

Early and late in the day you may be able to stick a few eyes. Pike are usually willing to play.

If the wind blows you off the lake, I personally have had the best luck trolling cranks by the airport near the old railroad pilings, Fishing around the pillars by the bridge, or I have caught a few in Hattie’s hole. The pike are fun to catch on the weed edges and in the backwater, I have only tried spoons and caught quite a few. Nothing monsterous but enough 5 to 8 pounders to keep my interest.
