1st trip to LOTW was a great success. I went up to a friend of mine’s cabin for a long weekend. We went up through Baudette, MN into Ontario and fished the Canadian side. We mostly fished around Village, Gooseneck, and Snake Islands. The weather was fantastic in the low to mid 70’s with light wind and sun most of our trip. With so much water to cover I was surprised that we had most of the lake to ourselves. On the busiest day Saturday we maybe saw 5 other boats on the water. Very low fishing pressure.

Fish seemed to be scattered and not in big schools. Our plan of attack was to stick and move to find active fish. We targeted sand flats, rock reefs, and windblown bays with weeds. We would fish each location for ½ hour or more depending on fish activity and pick up anywhere from 3-10 fish and then have to move to find more fish. Most fish ranged in the 15-18 incah range. We caught a few in the 20-22 in rhange and the biggest was 24 inches.

Our primary tactic was either dragging jigs anywhere from 3/16oz to 3/8 or pulling spinners in 5ft of water up to 20 ft tipped with minnows, crawlers, or Berkley Gulp Minnow Grubs. The best colors for jigs were chartreuse, orange and gold. For spinners my best colors were Jolly Roger Tackle spinners in Twisted Sister, Firebelly, and Firetiger. Minnows and Gulp were about 50/50 in success rate and crawlers having some luck, but not as much as the other 2.

All in all we caught well over 100 walleye in 2 ½ days of fishing, had great weather, ate fresh walleye with friends, enjoyed a few beverages and had a great time. I cannot wait to do it again.

    Ben:

Nice work, love that part of LOW, and this time of year it must be great. Interested in hearing more about your spinner bite.

James and I fished them last August with some pretty big blades, and gold being a perennial favorite up there, opted for a few colors in that spectrum. I’m putting up a pic of that Firebelly, as it looks like a winner for alot of different lakes I fish. What size blades were you pulling?

    Thanks!

    Joel,
#3 blades with #2 red Gamakatsu hooks. Walleye have a big mouth and I like to use a bigger hook so I can really set it into their toothy mouths. Plus when I use Gulp minnow grubs on them I like to have the bigger hook so more of it is exposed when setting the hook. Most people don’t think of putting plastics on a spinner, but the extra tail action in combination with a spinner is DEADLY! I get all my terminal tackle from Shawn and hand tie my own spinners. He has the best blades, beads, snells, and terminal tackle on the market

Nice fish and report! I will be up there for fourth of July and I can’t wait. I hear you on the plastics with the spinners. The Smelt color ripple shad was out fishing live bait by a big margin last fall. The crawlers are usually pretty good bait in July.
