The lure of big pre spawn Walleyes on the rainy river excited me and I hooked the Warrior up and headed to the Rainy River Sat with Scott. Scott Qualls had never fished the river and was pumped to get the boat in. We stocked up with live bait plastics more jigs Spot tailed shinners and rainbows. The minnows worked the best on jigs size 3/8oz or 1/4oz but we did see alot of guys fishing Plastic tubes casting shore lines. Didnt seem to matter the pre spawn walleyes Sat were stacked in the river in all the areas I fished. The males are still Milking and all the females still had eggs. They should spawn soon. The second last day before the season closed the river wasn’t that crowded. I chose to fish a spot that looked fishy with only one other boat near us. Looking down the river you could see the community spots loaded with boats. I hoped to get Scott on his P/B Walleye which needed to be over 27.5 ” He didnt get it his biggest was 25.5″ but he did miss fish hooked that came off that I think would of done it, those lost fish are always the next record. The limit is two fish each in the river and Scott wanted two to eat under the 19.5″ slot. We put our four fish in the livewell in about a half hour then worked for the big Girls. We caught lots of dandy fish a fun day Scott would hook a fish and get it in and say its another 17″ fish nice problem. I didnt keep track how many we caught and released a close guess 50 or more just like Fishing Canada. I didnt anchor just slow trolled the shore for miles using my HDS 8 and structure scan fishing in about 12ft to 8ft and we had doubles on and didnt go longer the ten minutes between bites or after you released a fish and baited up throw it out bang fish on. If you want to get a kid hooked on Walleye fishing go to the Rainy river I know I was again.

Nice report! We were up there as well Saturday- WHAT A DAY! Nice work guys!
April 16, 2012 at 2:03 am #1059194I was up also Fri, Sat, Sun morning – Friday, rained half the day – better bite, nice eaters and a couple 25″. Sat – started slow, night bite picked up with a friend catching his PB – 30″ nice fish. Sun morning, only 4, but nice and saw a 32″ get caught from a group from Rainy River Resort launch.
April 16, 2012 at 1:04 pm #1059237Great looking fish. Dont think I talked to anyone that was not on fish over the weekend up there. The bite was crazy good. One thing to keep in mind if going back in future years is that once you have a full limit in the live well you are done fishing.
Watched the DNR hit many guys on this on Saturday telling them to pack up and leave for the day or they would be ticketed. This was well before noon and made for some very unhappy fishermen that had traveled a long way to have their day cut very short. Fishing alone that left me most of the days with one walleye in the box. Sunday morning I had to release many eaters in the morning and then struggle later on to try and get one small enough to take home. They guys in the boat next to me gave me some funny looks for cheering a 19″ as my last fish of a great trip.
April 16, 2012 at 1:10 pm #1059269Good point Mike! I ended up getting 3 in the box right away on Saturday and waited until the end of the day to get the last one because I was unsure of that rule. I struggled to get that 19″ male as well.

Same is true while fishing any lake, river or stream in Minnesota. And the fish in your freezer count towards that daily limit too.

Good point Mike!! Might have a tough time convincing them your jigging for pike. Lol. I normally don’t keep any fish while down there, but definately a good plan to only have one in the box and IMHO leave the second one for a fish that may be hooked bad if your there to keep fish for a meal.
What a commencement to the season guys. I tipped my hat to the season and headed to the woods shed hunting over the weekend.

I’m still not sure about this…If two guys have three fish in the box, which guy is limited out and which guy can still fish? If these are individual limits, then you can realy only have one fish in the box per person-no?
Nice report Bob!
April 16, 2012 at 2:29 pm #1059321There is something in the regs about party fishing that I think covers that.
April 16, 2012 at 2:31 pm #1059323Yes, Party fishing is legal in Mn. From the Regs:
• A party is defined as a group of two or more persons:
– angling from a single watercraft; or
– if not in a watercraft, maintaining unaided visual and vocal contact with
each other.
• The total number of fish possessed by the party may not exceed the combined
limits of the numbers of the party.
• Each party member may transport only an individual limit of fish.-J.
April 16, 2012 at 2:46 pm #1059331Interesting I was not aware of that REG about your limit. Im always very careful to be legal all the time guess I need to read more. Thanks for that info Mike.
April 16, 2012 at 3:19 pm #1059344I was a little surprised that morning to hearing the CO tell guy to pack up, they where done walleye fishing for the day. Had known about the rule but had never heard or seen it enforced before. Had never seen CO pulling people over on the road before either but the weekend before they had boats pulled over on 71 south of Baudette. At 1st it looked like HWY patrol pulling them over but when we passed it was COs.
I dont care for getting checked by them but for the amount of fishing pressure going on up there do think its good they are making their presence known. Keep me on my toes with making sure everything was up to snuff. Life jackets, boat plug, fire extinguisher up to date, no fish even close to the length limit, skin on fillets, fish packed the right way and so on. Guess its what we have to adhere to to fish such a great fishery.
In three weekends up there seen the COs out working each weekend on a different part of the river. Twice on the river and once on the road. both times on the water they sent guys to shore for one reason or another.
April 16, 2012 at 5:25 pm #1059400On another topic, was anyone else having trouble with the walleyes biting off and breaking lines? Now I know full well that you need to retie once in a while but it seemed that I needed to after every 2-3 fish.
I fixed the problem by putting a 60# braided leader on well after I lost about 10 jigs.
April 16, 2012 at 6:46 pm #1059455Had problems with the pike shredding my power pro and having to retie every now and again. Did hook a nice 29″er with some extra jewelry on her lip. A nice 3/8 gold orange jig that looked fresh out of the box. Bad not on that jig as there was no line on it.
Those big fish where inhaling the plastics. You could her the line on their teeth while trying to reel in. What type of line where you using. Cold see those teeth effecting some lines.

Well that wasn’t mine. I lost all of my gold 3/8 precision jigs on fish or bottom that broke off far too easy. All the break were very clean with no bends to them. I also broke off 2 fish as they were netted. Both had about an inch of line still on them.
I use 10 lb Berkely sensation high vis orange. I also had one with 10# nanofil with the same problem. I was even tying 10# floro leaders on this with the same problem.
Next year I’m bringing some home made 20# floro leaders.
April 17, 2012 at 12:37 am #1059578I had some bite offs on Northerns. I had 8lb http://www.sufix.com/on two rods which I like never broke off with it. In the river a good braid like p-line or another super braid is good. Or maybe a 10lb sufix line for the river. Drag set correct with good line you shouldn’t break off.
April 17, 2012 at 1:48 am #1059593Weird about the PP problems. I ran suffix 832 in 6lb the last two weekends I was there and never had an issue.

I know when getting snagged up a myself oftne times your line can become damaged a bit. The slightest damage to any line no matter what your using can greatly reduce the advertised strength.
Beyond that……Kudos to you all and congrats on all the great fish!! I’ve really enjoyed the pics and posts from you boys.
I had antlers on the brain this week, so had to itch that scratch before we tackle the Big Pike!! BTW the SNOW overnight has hindered our search!! LOL!!
April 17, 2012 at 2:02 am #1059596Give us a snow picture or two Chris. Heard you guys got dumped on up there.
