I just could not take it anymore. All the pictures that James, Chris and others were putting up of these 28 to 30 inch were driving me crazy. So i made it a point to get up to the rainy river to see if i could find some of these beautiful fish myself.

Just as they had noted in previous reports, these fish were on a tear and big fish at that. I lost count at the number of fish in the 28 to 29 inch range and a few hit the 30 inch milestone to top it off.

For me, it was a 3/8th oz B fish N tackle precision jig with a moxie. The color preference was firecracker/chart tail but other colors such as white got fish as well. And boy did these fish hit the baits with authority. Despite the windy conditions, it was all too evident when a hungry walleye would decide to go for the kill as they about pulled the rod out of your hands on numerous occasions. It is so nice not having to worry about live bait and all the hassles that go along with it, especially on a border water. Thread on a plastic, catch 20 fish, replace, repeat. As simple as that! The bite was pretty consistent during the changing weather patterns. Mornings and evenings were best but that noon hour provided a lot of fish as well. I’m glad i got to experience this awesome fishery as it is something special.

Don’t quit using them. Keep going until you figure them out. The bite on plastics is second to none for me. It can be addicting.

    Grant,
What depth were you pitching 3/8 jigs in? I just got back and were were using 1 oz and still had a 45 degree angle or more jigging off the bottom on my line.

We also used 3/8th oz and slipped drifted with current/wind to pitch jigs into 8 to 10 foot. The bite the last 4 days was unreal for our group. Today we fished from 9 til 2 had 63 fish on the counter and only 2 fish under 20″. Very good. If the wind wasn’t blowing 30 mph right down the river it would have been a “stupid good” day.

Similar to Cal, we pitched into 7 to 10 feet of water. I never tied on anything heavier than 3/8th.
What depth were you guys fishing? How’d ya do?

I think the difference was we anchored the boat just above a hole/drop off on the line and fished the drop off. We did troll shad raps up stream at 1.5 mph in 10-12 fow and smacked them. We also went out to the lake and fished 23 fow off pine and did good in the mornings. I need to hop in a boat with one of you guys and learn the fine art of plastics.

Thats a nice fish there! sounds like you guys had plenty of action! And yes those B fish N tackle plastics, namely the moxie in my instance, and pluse r’s in others work wonders. Our boat had 2 other guys who planned on fishing live bait, and before the trip started i told em i would not touch a piece of live bait all trip. They thought i was nuts! By the end of the first day, guess what was on their line? Yup, a moxie. Those plastics are so efficient and deadly its almost not fair.

Dont think its a tough thing to do either. Ask James, or anyone, I rarely fish plastics. Im a troller/vertical jigger, not a plastics pitcher. Get yourself a few colors/models and cast away. If I can do it, im sure you can too!

Great job. We always target the deep holes in the river knowing the big gals use them to get out of the current. Your depths 7-10 surprised me.
    Always something new to learn…
