Stupid Good!!

James, Ben (Photo-Genius) and I simply murdered the Rainy River Walleyes. CSI could easily trace Slime DNA on our MX1825 from Skeeter to pinpoint the crime scene location. PULSE-R’s from BfishN tackle were literally “Walleye Candy” for those big pre-spawn Rainy River walleyes. Boys these are truly the real “MEAL” deal for big Walleyes. The broad base of the plastic body (I LOVE) with now a slightly shortened length combined with a heavy tail kick is CRAZY GOOD!! Walleyes are going Bat **** crazy over them, and though I started casting something else it didn’t take long for me to change it up!! If you fish shoulder to shoulder with Holst you NEVER I repeat NEVER want him to get too far ahead of you because it is impossible to catch up again!! We found that the Chart/Orange core, Pro Blue,Oyster and Firecracker/Chart. Tail were our personal best producing colors.

Water clarity was less than ideal while a light rain quickly washed some mud and grass into the system. Flow increased slightly from prior days fishing, but still beautiful for this bite.

Every single year I talk with guys at the landings that tell me they needed to stay vertical or drag jigs today…..EVERY SINGLE year I continue to huck BfishN plastics and simply CLOBBER these big female Walleyes. Those Walleyes running the guantlet from LOTW east as far as the Little Fork river in Ifalls still need to EAT though Spawning is the driving push.

I PROMISE you if by some stretch of the imagination you MIGHT feel you can’t tangle with a load of big Walleyes on plastics you simply are selling yourself short from the true paradigm of walleye fishing this time of year. This year again is NO different from the past; 99% of fisherman are driving up the current seam and floating down while jigging vertical with minnows. Oh……DEAD SHINERS ARE DISGUSTING!! Will you catch fish this way? YES SIR!! I simply have found not only will a plastics fisherman outfish the Meat guy on this bite, but will also NOT have purchase $50.00 worth of Shiners each morning. I bet I caught 75 Walleyes on 1 single Pulse-R!! Now granted it was time to retire it as it hangs in our cabin like a piece of compressed oatmeal!! These big Walleyes often seek current breaks or slack water, and roam this structure in simply sick numbers. I can’t over-state the fact that the strikes we received throwing 3/8 oz.H20 Precision jigs laced with Pulse-R’s were simply scary. At one point I looked at James and said “Hey Holst….You Know…When we started fishing this stretch I was hoping we get bit right!?….Now I’m honestly finding myself fearing each cast that I WILL!!” Literally boys I’d describe it like a kid shouldering up a high power rifle for the first time; He knows when he gathers the courage to finally squeeze that trigger there is going to be an immediate and uncomfortable jolt delivered to his already sore shoulder. These death hits were at times that brutal!! Both of us commented on a fear of losing a rod when our hands were cold early in the mornings. These days THAT is an expensive mistake!!

I’m going to ask James or Ben to kindly post further pics of what has now come our personal/Annual open water “Ceremonial BEATDOWN”. I know James was a bit hesitant to post “numbers” as he described it to me as “Nearly being unbelievable Man!); On the otherhand it is what it is, and as two simply fishing finatics that have both spent a good portion of our lives trying to figure out Walleyes…….This is as good as we’ve EVER seen it!! How about a 1 day total of 150-175 Walleyes (2 Guys) filming, Photo’s, Measuring and effectively releasing with 45-50 of those fish between 27-30 inches!!! Oh…..AND we didn’t launch the boat until around 11 am as we slept in and enjoyed a big breakfast!! (Like 5lbs worth!!)

STUPID GOOD!! I’m not sure if there is another word to describe it, but I’ll come up with something. I’m absolutely wore out, and I believe Holst is as well as he’s packed his bags with his truck pointing south!!

Next year gentleman…..I’m going to have to do it!! The fishing has just been too good!! I’m foregoing my 2 week break in between seasons!! (Wife aka “Fishing Queen” rolled her eyes at me) but I’ll be hosting the 1st annual “Rainy River Run W/Rainydaze”. Official announcement with first reservations will be announced tomorrow!! I’ve had many of you already shoot me Pm’s and emails reserving spots, so I just need to get this done. Right now…..I’m heading to get some aspirin for my hook setting shoulder!!

BTW……..I hope you enjoy this shoot as much as James and enjoyed filming it!!

The tackle box is loaded with pulse-R’s, orange included, the power pro is spooled, & I’m leaving Phillips early Monday morning. You guys sure know how to push the right buttons. Just hoping there are some fish in the river for me on Tues. Thanks for the post!!!!

They release PERFECT in this cold water. Still hat’s off to the anglers taking extra special care of these elite caliber fish!! Don’t rip them out of nets or release them like an NFL Quarterback hitting a deep crossing pattern. CPR…..EFFECTIVE!! Have camera ready and quickly take a photo or two. Stay out of the gills and don’t drop her into the bottom of the boat. We were literally grabbing 28-30 inch fish with neither of us taking a step towards the net while quickly releasing many of our fish as quick as we unhooked them boatside. Many of our big fish never were granted an inside look at Skeeters MX1825; For that I feel a bit bad as I believe everyone should see it.

Those plastic colors are simply KILLER!! Stick to your game plan! Keep yourself in a “Hair Trigger” position when fancasting. When on the pattern you WON’T mistake the crushing hit!! If so….you might want to consider golf.

How long will it last? Any place better than others or is it a secret? Where to stay? Can’t go next week, but next?

I would say it will only get better as long as we don’t get a big rain. Water remains cool and those big walleyes continue to pile up.

I think I seen them going through grand rapids yesterday dragging a skeeter with a black chev with a topper. Hopefully I can get up there next week again, last week was a bit slow for us

Could have been us coming home. I drive a black Duramax with topper… good eye!

As for the fishing I’ve honestly never seen or experienced anything like it. The numbers of big fish in that river right now are mind boggling. The only question now is if I can get back before April 15.

We launched out of Birchdale the first day and fished downstream south of Frontier. Second day we launch at Frontier. The fish are using every deeper hole in the river right now as a staging area as the push further upstream so any deeper hole around the landings is going to produce fish.

As for when to come… the season closes midnight on the 14th. so next week is your only option.

Hi Chris, James, and Ben. Just wanted to say thanks for sharing one of your spots with us this week. We were the guys in the Warrior boat. My dad is a vertical jigger to the core otherwise I would have been on the plastics and pitching. Your technique was spot on. It was fun seeing you guys slaying those pigs. Nice talking to you guys and good luck the rest of the season.
