    OK Boys!!!

I know many of you are chomping at the bit for some firsthand info on the river conditions. My buddy Ryan and I headed down for a few hours today to test the waters. Clarity was fair for the river this time of year. I suspect our overnight rains may have clouded up the water slightly for a day or two. Water temps were hovering around 40 degrees. There wasn’t much junk floating down the river and no ice to dodge. The landings of course wide open. General fishing activity was heavy towards LOTW and lighter as you progress east to Ifalls.

As for the fishing; There are multiple different philolophies when chasing Rainy River fish, and I’m not here to say what is best for your crew. For myself I simply have little interest in bumper boat fishing for eater class fish. I’d prefer to hunt sheds any day of the week instead. Once again today the general mass of boats participated in this drive up/drift down fishing vertical fishing. Success was NOT good for those anglers today. We saw a few fish caught, and only a couple slots. Late morning found most boats heading for shore presumably heading home or to a different river position. We fished away from the parade. As always 90% of the anglers were vertical jigging jigs and minnows.

I started pitching Moxies in the Chart/Pepper color scheme laced up with just a 1/4 oz. H20 precision jig……..Yes flow is down. Picked off a nice 23 and 26 inch fish up, but then couldn’t turn another eye. I switched to a tighter tail action for less aggressive fish considering our cold water; The Paddletail also fron BfishN tackle was much better for me. I used this in White with a white H20 Precision jig in 1/4 oz and pulled a few more 21-22 inch fish and a beautiful 27 and then the 29 inch 10lb pig stuffed full of spawn. Eggs didn’t feel very loose, so I think the drop will be a week or two forward.

Find those smaller holding points, cuts, turns and seams. It is my opinion based on our first few hours on the Old Man river that the numbers likely were not quite there yet. Still we fished a cold front with temps dropping 15 degrees from the morning launch to early afternoon, so that can certainly fool you as per true numbers of fish in your area.

Here is what I suggest; Instead of being completely anal on colors be more concerned in size and action change when other anglers give up. This simply means that what 90% of the guys are doing…..ISN’T working that day. Frankly it ISN’T ALWAYS easy fishing!! As it turned out the tight action of the paddletail was much more effective on the big fish than my personal favorite MOXIE today. A guy needs several confidence baits. When they hit it they took the rod out of your hand with smashing power. Still working the presentation slow today was critical. Match your jig weight to the flow. A jig and plastic guy NEEDS options and can’t fall in love with memories. It is crazy to think you’ll fish one weight in the 60 mile stretch of river, or one color, size, action……Year in and year out.

The big fish are of course here, but it will get better with the next warm up.

Dare to fish away from the crowds and dare to be different.

Should only get better!! Let your buddies attempt to “Helicopter spin” jigs and minnows while you sling Plastics!! Tell them your giving them a chance by not fishing meat! Make sure everyone ponies up the due sheckles for the big fish pot so you have more $$ for plastic supply replenishing!!

There are somethings you share with friends, and some you don’t.

    Hi Terry,

    Welcome to In Depth Outdoors!!

I am using the 6’10 G-Loomis Extra Fast Mag Med NRX rod

On the rod pictured I was using a Shimano Sahara 2500 spooled with 10/2 Power pro. My Other rod along had a Shimano Stradik C14 2500; This rod is also laced up with 10/2 Power Pro. On a river bite such as this I normally tie jigs direct to the Braid without the use of a Mono/Fluoro Lead.

IMHO the 6’10 G-Loomis Extra Fast Mag Med NRX is the best feeling jig/pitch stick on the market with a sufficient back bone to barb monster Walleyes at a distance. There is a very fine line between bite detection and sticking these Walleyes. Guys may scoff at elite caliber Graphite blanks, but I assure you a set up such as this gives anglers a sufficient edge in all facets of this particular bite.

Word to the wise don’t try it unless you want to buy it; I can tell you firsthand what happens next!! LOL!!

Oh…..It can!! Though James and I spent most of early April ice fishing the year prior we truly pinned down an elite bite. While pre-fishing for the television show I figure my boat landed nearly 60 Walleyes over 27 inches. While filming the show I bet we landed another 30!!

So…..Though both my friend Ryan and I were darn happy to take a day off shed hunting to bend the long rods; A shortened day landing a 26,27 and 29 is actually nothing to incredibly special considering the high level paradigm in past years.

I suspect this bite to explode with water temps creeping up and our run off ending very early.

The Big fork and Little fork rivers busted loose far earlier than on a normal year, and this could very possibly align the stars for yet another Ri-DONK-Ulous run!!

The ONLY thing……I hesitate to say that could hinder the bite would be a long heavy stretch of spring rain.

We’re shooting 26 degrees on the Mercury stick this am. This will likely hold down those river temps while cooling the fingers of river anglers today.

No overnight rain, so clarity should continue to improve as this flushes to LOTW.

When nobody even moves to grab a landing net when another 27″ fish is at boat side… fishing’s good!

Ill be easy to find in the hundreds of boats out there. Navigator with 75 Yamaha on back. Still got some St Croix, LaCannes and IDO stickers on the sides. We will be right down the shore from you at Rivers Bend.

White……..MIGHT be the best Rainy River color as clarity is reduced. Things to consider if water clouds during your stay. Walleyes…….DIDN’T portage out of the river!!

Fish remain in the same numbers, but simply lack visibilty to chase and hammer your presentations. Fishing too fast give you a very slim window while your in that big Walleyes “Wheelhouse”.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s only 2lb. diameter. Nothing to it.

James nailed it on the head, have fond memories of those days spent on the rainy when you are quick hand landing or even “quick releasing” just another 27″ boatside, because the fishing is “that good”.
Not many places you can get into pods of big fish like the rainy river.
    I can’t wait for Monday!

Thanks Chris – might have to upgrade one of my SJR783 GLX’s after I give the NRX a shake…

Gentleman!! We started out day in the upper 30’s with high winds. We received a pretty fair rain last night that may very well keep clarity down a bit and flow increasing. Water temps are holding steady in the upper 30’s to 40. Fish are to be had NO QUESTION!! Optimum conditions still on the horizon!!

Thanks for the continued updates. Are you going to get out on the river again this week? If so look forward to the report!

I think the with the next stable weather pattern and warm up things are going to be great!

You bet!! Glad to help. We have a couple cool days forecasted calling for snow showers tonight into tomorrow. Thursday things look to clear up a bit, but remain in the lower 40’s for highs. Fri-Sun look much nicer an may warm our water into the low 40’s.

Though I won’t be on the river during the snow showers I may get out again on Thursday. Friday I’ll be heading to to work the Skeeter boat Center at the Northwest Sportshow. From then on I’ll get my share of fishing in on the old man river!

I just finished a short article for the Outdoor News you can keep an eye out for as well.
