Crunch time is here. A week from tomorrow I will be on the road for Lake of the Woods! It will be my first time there EVER. What should I not forget to bring? Work has been taking up too much time and I am afraid I am going to overlook something. This is going to be one loooong week.

Anyone else going to be up there during the 19th-22nd?

    Thanks,

    FDR

My advice is bring two of everything. Heaters, hoses augers etc. one thing fails and it can ruin a trip. Conditions can turn brutal quick and it can be hard on the equipment.

Should have mentioned this earlier. Luckily we will be fishing from a permanent. The resort pops all the holes. So no need for augers or heaters.

    Thanks though!

There is no way I would make that trip without an auger! The house you stay in may be in a good area, but the hot hole cold be twenty yards from the house on any given day. It would be a shame to never be able to get through the ice . Other than that…cribbage board and plenty of beer…everything else you can survive without

I’ve never done the permanent thing out there, but I know you won’t need much. A jigging rod and a bobber rod, radio, forceps, line clippers, jigs that rattle, a pad to sit on, and a flasher.

    A good cushion.

The houses we fished out of had metal folding chairs…..they were tough on the rump after a few hours……..

Make a list. I keep a hunting list and a fishing list on my computer. I print for each trip and start from there at least a week out. You will be suprised how many things get written down over that time. Modify list as time goes on. When I use the list I dont forget major items. When I dont for quick trips things get forgotten sometimes. Another method I use is imagining yourself on the ice, fishing. Go through what you need from clothes to hooks to accomplish. This exercise works well for gear but falls short on everything else you may need for the trip.

    Oh, and the cushion!

I’ll be staying at the Wigwam from the 20th to 23rd. We have a group of 9 guys going up. It will be our first trip. We are fishing out of one of Wigwams permanents and will also be bringing portables just in case.

on that auger note. We have asked the guides we were with (wigwam and sportsman) to punch holes all over outside for us to hole hop. I suggest that instead.

also a cushion, beer, sonar and you should be set.

There are two bait shops when you enter town near resorts. We always stop at both to get the latest and greatest lures. Works every time. Canadian stop sign is a must in my opinion. They will let you know.

    THAT is a FACT!!!!!
Also, pack Toilet paper, pepto, and rolaids. Nothing worse than getting the chitz when you are 5 miles from no where, trapped till dark and your colon feels like it’s going to fall out……..

Pink, Gold, and Pink/Red-glow jigs dominate 90% of the time.

Stop in Blackduck or prior and bring yourself some good shinners, as they outperform the resort crappie-minnows—so-called-fatheads they supply. Not knocking the resorts….They get what they get, but what they get is more/less glorified crappie minnows. A shinner will prevail.

I’ve used Log Cabin’s bait before and haven’t been disappointed.

They’re located just prior to Wigwam.

That is the plan. My father went last year and he said they were more than willing to drill some extra holes.

Thanks for the heads up Gary. I do think the plan is to pick up some emerald shiners and “REAL” fatheads.

When we were there last March, we were NOT able to find live shinners in the area. Ran into a buddy who found the closest ones at Blackduck.

    Here’s the story….
We were all catching typical LOW dinks. I dug in the minnow bucket and found a nice meaty shinner. Hooked her up to a jig and popped a nice walleye instantly, while all others caught nothing. Found 1 more nice shinner. Same thing….Instant nice walleye. In the meantime, all others in the fishhouse caught nothing. No more shinners in the bucket…Dropped down a chubby-darter in shinner pattern and popped 3 more nice walleyes, while in the meantime, all others in the same shack only caught dinks. It wasn’t a fluke. Sucked, because we couldn’t find shinners locally. I ran into a buddy who was up there at same time. He had live shinners and confirmed what I found. They were popping NICE walleyes on the shinners and only dinks on the little fatheads.

Plenty of shiners this year in the bait stores in Buadette.

I’d bring an extra battery for the flasher.

I had a loose wire on mine and it didnt get charged overnight. If it werent for the guide we used having a spare battery I would have been without one.
