Well four of us managed a 3 1/2 day get away to gods country. We stayed at Wheelers Point and visited the Wig Wam, Adrains and Ballards also. I think that in the 3 1/2 days of fishing we caught well over 400 walleyes, sauger, perch, tullibee and eel pout. It was the best ice fishing that I have ever experienced on Sat. Most of the walleye we kept were between 16-18″ and the sauger we all over 14″. We were in 18-19 feet of water, using stop signs, macho minnow (GLOW RED), forge minnow, buck shots and jigging raps. The biggest fish that we got throught he hole was a very healthy 26 incher that weighed 7.8 lbs. Wow it was a tank. We caught numerous walleyes between 16-18 inches and over 15 that were over 20 inches. Between the four of us there were about five other fish that I am guessing were over 28″ but just couldn’t get them into the hole and they came unbuttoned. Its just a fish story because I have no proof. On Sat my fishing partner had one bust him off and 20 minutes later I caught it, and the only reason I say that I caught it was because it had a gold buckshot in its mouth. I am not going to lie that I got a little exicted when I seen the head in one hole and the tail in another. We had it up several times but I just could not get the head in the hole. It hooked the ice and away it went. I would have guessed that it was all of 30″. The even stranger part is that the next day when we drilled the same holes and set up I was pounding my jigging rap in the mud when I noticed on the LX-5 that I had something on the hook so after checking it the gold buckshot that was busted off the day before that was in the fishes mouth that I had caught was now back in the fish house. Wow another fishing story.
We fished three days in the same holes by a large crack that was opening and closing almost all three days. One day it would be two feet of open water and then the ice would shift and it would slam shut. Well on Mon am there was a resort Geo Tracker with chains on that was driving back and fourth that decided to try the crack. All we heard was a large splash and felt the ice sag. We looked out of the house and the tracker had fallen half way in and some how put it in reverse and was able to get the vehicle out. We took some photos and the vehicle had to be towed as it was missing a sway bar and the front right tire was blown. The guy is very very lucky. The ice is still not safe there are some ares that holds over 10-12″ and then others less than 6″
All in all it was a great time with good friends, we ate lots of fresh fish and had a few coctails to.
If you are wondering if its worth it, dont hesitate and get up there its really on fire.
