Suitable Ice for Crank Down?

  • #1285777

    Hey guys,

The ice fishing itch finally got me and i’m looking to plan a trip up to LOTW for a weekend as soon as possible.

Could anyone provide insight to when we should expect driveable ice that can hold a pickup and crank down shack? (historically speaking)

    Thanks!

We go two weekends before Cristmas every year and some years we are not sure until the last minute we are going to get out, even with ATVs. It seems common at that time of the year he (Morris Point) has his light plow trucks out but only allows ATV or snowmobile traffic beyond shore. One recent year it was collapsables only, no wheel house allowed. Some years you will be OK with your truck but I would say plan for later if you are not set up to tow your wheel house with an ATV.

We used to drive out of Long Point the day after Christmas, but with the warm weather the last 10 years I would say go down by Zipple Bay around that time frame with your wheelhouse. From what I remember it seems the ice gets thicker their faster.

We always go the 2nd week in Jan to be safe, I have seen 4 wheelers in the drink in the bay in front of wheelers point a week before.

I’m betting they were in the wash out.
