I am planning my first trip to lake of the woods and wondering when in October I should go maybe a place or two to stay also. Any help is much appreciated.

NOW, Was there week and a half ago and 4 of us had 65 walleyes to the net by lunch. We were up on the reefs and in the islands 25-35 miles out. We burned over $200 in boat fuel in 2 days but man did we net fish.

I would hands down recommend Zippel Bay. I have yet to find any better cabins and prices on the lake yet.

I am far from an expert on the matter but have been up several times, the last being Sep 10-11.
We have stayed at a couple of different places but lately have settled on the Wigwam as our home away from home. They have great fall rates, $30 a night per person I think. If you ask J.P. at the Wigwam he will get you on fish. Just booked another trip for mid October.
    Have fun up there!

I was up to Zippel Bay Resort about 5 weeks ago. Of the places on the lake that I have visited, Zippel is the nicest resort I have been to.

    August report.

I go up in October every year and the later the better. It is always a gamble trying to hit the shiner run. Last year we hit the warm indian summer weekend in late October. Lake was flat calm for 3 days straight. Caught a ton of fish just not as many big fish. This year we are heading up on the 13th-17th just because it worked out for everyone. Fishing will still be excellent. As the water cools the fish move shallower and will congregate near Pine Island.

We always stay with Steve Sweet. He is one hell of a nice guy and has been guiding/living on Lake of the Woods for 35 years. He will get you set up- and has fridge full of forzen shiners which you WILL want. His cabin/house is the next bay to the east from zipple bay. When you come out of his channel you will be right at the pine island bouys. Drop an anchor and catch fish all day long. The nice thing about staying wiht Steve is you don’t burn any gas because you come out the channel and you are where you should be fishing. I think Steve’s place is $30 a night per person.

Check out his site and give him a call

I’ll post a report when I get back.
