Preserved emerald shiners

I’m heading up to LOTW near Baudette in a few weeks. Last time we were there we used mostly small frozen shiners and caught a lot of small fish. Has anyone had any experience using the bags of preserved emerald shiners that you can buy in Fleet Farm and other places? Just wondering if they work, or am I just going to throw them away at the end of the trip. Thanks.

I brought a bag up too and didn’t have nearly as good of luck as using frozen shiners. From now on, I ‘ll just be using the ones they sell up there. I’ll be up Sept 10th-17th. See ya there?

Had the same experience last year. Brought a bag up and my buddy was killing me with the frozen shiners (5+ to my 1). I think I’ll stick with the frozen ones from now on. The only thing I can think of is that they do not like the taste/smell of the liquid they are preserved in. Good Luck up there. Let us know how you do. I’ll be up in mid October. Can’t Wait

Thanks for the advice guys. I’ll stick to the frozen shiners and put the $10 towards something else for the tackle box.

There is a bait shop right outside baudette that has some great jigs you can spend that ten bucks on. I can’t remember the name of it but there is liquor store and a Mexican resturant next to it. I’ll post a pic of our goto jig later tonight.

The bait shop is Log Cabin Bait.

This was the hot jig for us the last few years

Thanks Russ. We used jigs very similar to that last time, with purple instead of pink. Sounds like Log Cabin Bait has everything one could need for a good fishing trip. Will plan to stop there on the way up.

Try the bait shop in Baudette for the frozen shiners. As we were leaving LOTW last year we stopped there to try to replace a lost lure (a special color). The frozen shiners they had were much larger than the ones we bought at the resort.
