When I say the bite could not be better – I mean the bite could not have been better
My dad and one of my best buddies Mark left for Mille Lacs and stayed at my cabin on Thursday night. This was the night before we were headed to Wigwam Resort for 3 and a half days of fishing on lake of the woods. I typically fish Mille Lacs but it was time for some new water and a change of pace.
We poured the coffee early on Friday morning and hit the road. Everything went as planned and Wigwam allowed us to check in early so that we could get a half day on the water. We got everything unpacked and hit the water.
Friday we pulled leadcore and used blades with 2 oz bottom bouncers. Although we had calm conditions and hot weather we managed 9 nice eyes. Nothing out of this world but a good day of fishing.
Then it happened! Saturday, Sunday, and Monday offered some great fishing! We found ourselves a small rock pile that we had all to ourselves for the next three days that was absolutely loaded with fish. As soon as we pulled up to the strucure we made the best decision of the trip. We decided to drop the anchor and jig. For the next three days we anchored and jigged the exact same reef and landed 99 walleyes ranging from 14 to 28 inches. We were jigging 3/8 oz jigs – primarily gold but color didn’t seem to matter all that much. We were using frozen shiners, as well as, night crawlers.
The funny thing is on Sunday we only fished from 8 to 11 because of some issues we had to get resolved with the boat! A huge thank you to Wigwam resort for getting us safely back to the resort. On Saturday and Monday we had our limit by 11:00 am but fished until about 4 or 5 each day just looking for that trophy.
Great stories, good food, great fishing, and great memories. Thanks dad, thanks Mark, and thanks Wigwam for good accomodations.
**The highlight of the trip was a once in a lifetime experience that offered good laughs all the way home. On Monday I set the hook and told Mark to grab the “big net” because I had a big one on. I thought I had a wall hanger on for about 30 seconds when my line started to go limp. I thought for a second that I had lost the fish, but realized something was still on my line. As I continued to reel I told Mark I didn’t know what the deal was. After a few seconds Mark and I both jumped back as a huge sturgeon exploded out of the water one foot from the side of the boat. The thing had spit the jig but managed to jump about 3 feet out of the water. It was such a shock that we laughed for about the next 10 minutes before we could manage to get back to walleye fishing.
The bite is on so do yourself a favor and get up to LOTW!
