The fishing up there is great right now. We caught fish in depths from 12-36 feet and we caught atleast some on every technique we tried-trolling, spinners, rigging, and jigging. My Dad was up all week primarily trolling in the deeper mud areas and having some good days, but they weren’t getting the nicer slot fish or any big fish that we needed for the MTT tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Friday we made the run up to the islands. In the first hour we caught 10 fish with 4 between 18-19 inches-perfect start! The next couple hours we trolled this area back and forth trying to upgrade the slots or find a big fish. The bite slowed way down so me moved an 1/8th of a mile to troll another area. The plan was to troll and try to mark some fish to anchor up on. We never got to drop the anchor because the “over” we were looking for hit my Dad’s #7 Shad Rap about 5 minutes into the pass. She was 28 3/8″ so we decided to call it quits and make the run in to make sure the fish didn’t shrink. There ended up being 6 “overs” weighed and we ended up in 6th.
Saturday it was really rough in the area we wanted to target. Between the lightning the night before, rain, and wind, the fish were not biting. We rotated through all of our usual Shad Raps, Hornets, Flicker Shads, and Taildancers with only a few small keepers to show for it. About 10am we dropped the anchor and started jigging. Orange or pink jigs tipped with Shiners were the ticket. We caught a fish about every 2-3 minutes, and they were all small or 20-22 inches. For the last hour we trolled again and were able to upgrade our slots and had a few large fish that got the blood pumping.
Saturday afternoon we picked up my brother, loaded up some , and headed out to do some fishing. We trolled leadcore in 22 feet along some reefs by Rocky Point. The fish cooperated and we had doubles, a few triples, and a mixed bag of small saugers, keeper sized walleyes, and a couple walleyes around 23-25 inches. Music playing, rods bending, nice weather, and some quality time with my Brother and Dad.
