Oh joy. So the FW thinks it’s time for a new mattress, and I’m cheap. Where’s a good place in or near the Cities to get a decent cheap mattress (new! don’t even go there)? I told her if it’s too much money, I’m taking my half, sleeping on a camp mat and buying boat goodies. Ideas?

I second that about not skimping on a mattress. For how much time you spend in it every day and how it effects your daily performance, this is one area where up really shouldn’t shop alley based on price.
I would also check out the original mattress factory.
Good luck, fun stuff to do especially on a nice day.April 3, 2011 at 1:03 pm #953540Select-comfort- -Best of both worlds. Hard or soft sides. You choose your hardness. Sleeping on air. It’s the best.
April 3, 2011 at 1:22 pm #953545Has your wife been talking to mine. We are doing the same thing today. We are heading over to the select comfort or sleep number store after lunch. From what I have heard there is nothing cheap about those places.
Any tips on what to look for in these types of beds?
April 3, 2011 at 1:26 pm #953548Here is a link to a old post about Sleep # beds. Think Im going to have to bite the bullet on one as not getting a good night sleep sucks. I swear some night Im up every 20 minutes or so rolling over because something hurts.

IMHO…….. it’s never been good to buy a cheap mattress
Mattress’s: Too bad you can’t test ’em out before you buy ’em. What we thought was the most comfortable bed in the store that was in the neighborhood of $2000 has been nothing but restless nights and many back aches. Just a warning Czech, do your research and don’t buy a bed from Sears
April 3, 2011 at 2:32 pm #953569Here is another.

This page also rates beds on how they work for extracurricular activities. So how do you become a tester for that?
April 3, 2011 at 5:20 pm #953606If you feel like driving out to Monticello. (yeah I know it’s a drive) My dad owns a mattress store. a little ma and pop shop. He has worked for the big box stores and didn’t like how they did things so he opened his own place. No you will not find some of the names you will at the box stores, but he doesn’t want his customers paying for names either.
anyways you want his information let me konw. I know he’ll will more than take care of you. Plus if he doesn’t have what he thinks you would like or need he’ll tell you and point you to the guy who does.

April 3, 2011 at 7:26 pm #953631Although I hate their commercials, we’ve had very good luck with Mattress Factory – always seem to come in a couple hundred lower than HOM or elsewhere for comparable mattresses. Had two mattresses for several years and they are made well, hold up well and aren’t breaking down at all.
I agree with the others, don’t underbuy.

April 3, 2011 at 7:37 pm #953633I’m a bit cheap, I’m also partly crazy, but I think I may buy one unseen off amazon. HERE Same company apparently makes Serta’s foam mattresses. Having issues finding a Serta foam mattress dealer, maybe that’s not a good sign… who knows.
Or well go with a king spring bed.
We’re going with a platform bed too, skip paying for a box spring and new frame, we’re going from a queen to a king sized bed.
Ikea seems to have decent prices and reviews on their mattresses and a 90 love it warranty, (which isn’t all that great really, will let you one exchange (exchange only) in 90 days.)
We bought our platform from IKEA, just trying to decide on a mattress.
I think it’s got a lot to do with changing weather right now, but we’re having a tough time getting good sleep too. (that and we have coils starting to poke us, we’re probably overdue )
April 3, 2011 at 7:47 pm #953636Funny you mention this Rat.
We’ve had one for something over 5 years now.
I sleep like a baby, but the FW hates it.
April 3, 2011 at 8:02 pm #953641Thanks gang, made it home with my wallet still, not sure if that’s good or bad? I get the part about not being too cheap, but I start fidgeting north of $1000, heck we’re getting into kicker territory then! I keep hearing not so good stories about the high end stuff, then that the coil ones are old news. I always slept best in the camper on the 6 inch thick stiff as a board foam one, so go figure. Can you even buy just the bed without the foundation anymore? We just need the mattress, our frame is no foundation one. Send me mom and pop info please, that’s my kind of sale. Thanks again, I need to go look at the motorcycle again to see how I’m going to fit my 9 footers on it, someone said the carp were biting……no time for sleep!
wormdunkerPosts: 596April 3, 2011 at 8:06 pm #953642The Sleep number beds they use in hotels pale in comparison to the real deal. We have the primo top of the line King. Best purchase I have ever made. Went to Duluth and stayed in the Radisson. They had single bladder sleep number without a pillow top. If you sleep two in a queen single bladder one persons nose touches the ceiling the other is at a number that is adequate. Fortunately for me it was my wifes nose touching the ceiling . Do not judge the comfort rest by the hotel versions.
April 3, 2011 at 8:50 pm #953649We got a Tempur-Pedic about 8 years ago…. we love it. The biggest seller for my wife, besides comfort (In home trial) was the fact that the mattress will not accumulate stuff inside of it… like dead skin cells and whatever else She seen a show about what accumulates inside a conventional mattress, including the sleep number beds, over time… it was gross to say the least They are not cheap, I want to say ours was $1400, 8 years ago, but worth every penny in my opinion (mama happy). I am done flipping and turning mattress’ too I have bought our last mattress although I see they have an adjustable version now
April 3, 2011 at 8:55 pm #9536503hrs of bed shopping today. Wow. What the heck are they making them things out of today? The sales people make it seem like if you are going to spend under $1000 for a bed you might as well be sleeping on dirt. I do feel bad for the people that got to watch the wife and I roll around on beds all afternoon.
Hom did have the Setra foam beds. Nice beds but think we are going to go for the Sleep number bed. They where about $500 less and just as comfortable. I like the fact that you can adjust them to.
Anyways I figure not having to lug around that extra $2500 bucks in my wallet all day should make my back feel better and get me a good nights sleep.
April 3, 2011 at 8:58 pm #953651Got a Sleep Number last fall and won’t trade it. Thinking about getting one for the camper. My sister had to deal with CS and they are 2nd to none.
April 4, 2011 at 1:11 am #953740Nother Sleep Number advocate. My wife had back problems…not for the 10 years since we had the sleep number. Whatever you do don’t think cheap, think you spent 1/3 of your day there…it better comfortable no matter what direction you go. Same thing with your pillow
April 4, 2011 at 3:11 am #953759I agree with not going the cheap route. Originally, my wife and I had bought a higher quality coil spring mattress (around $1200) and three years later it was sagging and wore out. Tempur-Pedic or Sleep Number bed is the way to go. Money has been in short supply for awhile, but when we needed a new bed a couple of years ago, we decided to drop the cash and get a Tempur-Pedic. I figured I was investing in myself–better sleep=healthier and happier body.
If you do go the Tempur Pedic or Sleep Number route, make sure you get the frame, mattress cover, delivery and at least one or two of the tempur pillows thrown in for free. It may take some talking, but they will do it.April 4, 2011 at 8:07 pm #953975My wife and purchased a latex foam bed from the Original Mattress Factory. I’m not sold on it yet, but I think it is not broken in all the way. She likes it though. It was not as comfy as the one in the store initially, but is getting better. They do sell just the mattress at the OMF. Most beds there are less than 1000 dollars with a couple being over that depending on size.
We have a platform bed as well. The only bad thing about platforms is they are really high once you get a thick mattress on them. My wife and I are above average height, so it is not a big issue for us. The dog doesn’t seem to like it as much though.April 5, 2011 at 12:04 am #954029Good info thanks, I knew hom carries some foam, we’ll have to swing by now. Didn’t know omf carried foam too, gotta check them out.
Don’t try me wrong on cheap, it’s gotta be the bed we want, for the cheapist price.
April 6, 2011 at 5:06 am #954423Well I think we’re going to try our luck with Amazon, stopped into Hom and tried out Serta’s foam bed and we really liked it, every thing I’ve read says sleep innovations makes Serta’s bed, and we both instantly liked it. The cover is a little diferent I think, it’s also 416 shipped, versus 1k at HOM.
April 6, 2011 at 11:44 am #954463We liked those Sleep Innovation beds to Nick. Price was running about $2500 for the one we liked. Ended up with the 5P sleep number bed. The sleep number bed felt very similar to the Sleep Innovation but I liked the fact that you could adjust it up or down from there. Price on the Sleep number was about $500 less than to.
That sound like a great price on Amazon. Got a link to that. We picked what we thought was the best fit and deal for what we looked at but still thought prices where crazy on all the beds.
