With the snow melt I have had new visitors! At first glance you would think Gophers. But these mounds are in heavy black soil. I have a very sandy yard only feet away from these mounds. In the past I have had numerous Gophers, but never down in the heavy soil.

    Are these Gophers??

    Groundhog maybe??

I would dig one hole out to see what type of tunneling is there. Size of tunnel should help narrow it down.

If it’s a groundhog should I post over on IDO-Hunting? Let them boys come over and blast it. Maybe we can do a early season BBQ beer-fest?

On a serious note………is poison a option here?

I think pocket gophers or moles. If you Google them, it will show how to differentiate between the mounds. They’re the only animals I know of that mound like that. Voles do different damage…I just found some in my yard this afternoon!

Probably moles. They like areas that hold crawlers and grubs.

Did someone in the neighborhood let the cattle out? Might be a Black Angus?

My lawn looks the same. With the heavy early snow, i don’t think the ground froze. They worked late into the fall and early winter taking their toll on my lawn as well. I heard to put juicy fruit in the tunnels and the %$#&?@ers will choke on it. This is why i drink.

My vote is moles, very easy to poisen, back in the day moles carried a hired bounty than pocket gophers!!

I heard it was bubble gum… maybe that’s why it didn’t work for me.

Spraying my yard with beer didn’t work either…truly a waste of beer.

I’ve never seen moles that leave a pile on the ground like that. There’s just a tunnel that raises the ground.

Depending on the size…to me they look like old pocket gopher piles.

Might want to check with your neighbors to see if there’s any crop circles near by too.

Right BK. It would look like little run ways in your yard with moles or voles.

Just thinking…it could be one of the guys from the MN River…since you aren’t for two lines in MN.

They are pocket gopher mounds. Traps are the only sure thing.
