Lawn Questions

Im looking for a little guidance for my lawn. I bought a house at the end of october and noticed a few pocket gopher mounds. My neighbor said they left his yard after fertilizing. I fertilized last fall an plan on doing it again this spring and into the summer. What is the best fix for these little buggers?
My next issue is moss in the lawn. The house was vacant for a while before we moved in so the grass was tall than normal but not out of control. Will proper lawn care take care of this? We have no trees so I don’t see shade being the issue unless its from the taller grass and a wet summer. I’m looking for a little help so I can plan my attack. Thanks.

There are fertilizers with a moss control chemical in them. I would give that a shot. After it looks like the moss is dead or drying up and turning colors, I would rake it up and get rid of it.

As far as the gophers go, if you do not have to many, maybe get a few traps and trap them.

Last year was terribly wet so I wouldn’t worry about the moss unless it last beyond normal care.

    Gophers are a pain.

    Yep, dynamite the gophers!
Then ROUNDUP the whole yard and go fishing

Seriously, most fertilizers with any weed control will nip any moss problem unless it’s a very wet year. If your watering, water in the morning, not evening.
Also, sounds like your yard had a nice stand of grass, so maybe try a 10-10-10, or a 15-5-10, not a 28-0-0, doesn’t sound like you need that much Nitrogen at this time….

the little part about being tested and “needing” P, is your way to get it. I test my yard and every year, it “needs” it

In MN, you can’t use a lawn fertilizer with phosphorus except on a new lawn.

Absolutely right on the MN law re: P in fertilizer.

But Zits’ post looked like he’s in WI….so even then, look into your laws over there as well and do applications accordingly.

In Mn, you can’t get it “for the hell of it” you need to have a soil test in hand, stating it, from the extension agency to get it…

Right, starter fertilizer… he is talking about an established lawn and getting the right mix, which starter is not allowed. Look on the shelf, you find any with the 2nd number (P) having a value…. you have to have this mixed special. He also is in WI, but speaking for Mn, I suggested getting the test. Using it (such as starter fert) on a established grass, is illegal in MN. Nowhere did I say to do this… I don’t recall anyone talking about putting it on for the hell of it… other than your insinuating ???

Bad advice & again, illegal to put on your lawn…. now this is what Ralph was talking about… as fisherman, I would also hope you would not just dump Phosphorous on your lawn, get the test and get the right mix.

I do not use the stuff.

What I was trying to say is that it would cost much less if needed.

They could ban it for all I care.

X2 Lawns consume way to much free time and take away from time on the water.

Find a good lawn service and let them deal with it.

Thats pretty much what I have done.

I use to live in the country and people would laugh at for for the way I took care of my lawn. It had to be perfect or I spent all day on it.

I moved to town 8 years ago and now have a smaller lawn. I mow it and that is it.

My lawn is so thick, it needs no chemicals to kill any weeds as the gass is sooo thick.

I have a lawn care dude areate it and also thatch it every year.

    Mowing is enough for me.

Those lawn dudes need to make some money and I can go fishing nore days.

More flower beds and wildflowers make for less lawn. Looks nicer too.

Throw down an application of any of the Weed & Feed and you will be good to go, if that don’t cut it than that hire it out. It shouldn’t need any more attention than a lawn that has been maintained.
