I took my boat out today, after about 3 minutes of running just shy of full throtle the rev limiter kicks in and slows me down to an idle, also the temp alarm goes off too. I can wait about 1 min and it will be fine for another 3 minute run. Just not sure and im not finding anything useful on the internet to help. I am not a very mechanical person. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. Oh and i checked my oil and it is perfect, also checked to make sure there was water coming out of the “pee” hole (thats what grandpa always called it .) Everything looks fine, which leads me to believe it is a sensor or something but i dont know where to begin.

Could be numerous things and something very simple.

I would go to a dealer and have it checked for codes if it is a newer motor.

Then one will know for sure what the issue is and one can also have some peace of mind knowing it is fixed for sure.

I agree it could be a sensor.

My Merc 4 stroke would set an alarm and it was running fine and was peeing. Trouble was, there was a small pebble restricting the weater flow behind the thermostat and that set the alarm off. I checked everything I could and found nothing.

Now I check behind the thermostat every month or so. Takes maybe 5 minutes.

My bet is water pump impeller, the pumps is running or the water wouldnt be peeing but the impetter may be damaged resulting in a much lower flow rate inturn triping the alarm, its happened to me 2 times in 5 years always early at P4 too

Sorry forgot to list that, it’s a 2006 Suzuki 4 stroke. How do I check the impeller?

Sounds like the impeller. Where are you located?

If you have not had the impeller changed yet it is time anyway and that most likely sounds like the water pump impeller. That motor is new enough they should be able to pull a code. Good luck.

It’s not that hard to change an impeller.

Maybe you could find a website which shows you how to do it.

It really is simple once you have done it.

Then if the alarm goes off, then pay to have it checked out.

One can always be on the safe side and change the imp[eller.

I put a new one in every spring. I fish the river alot and sand raiss heck with them.

I would be more than happy to help you change it but I do not know where you are located.

I will see if i can find out on line where the impeller is located, i already have the covers off the motor shouldn’t be too hard to find it.

Since you say you are “not a very mechanical person”, I would just take it to a mechanic in your area. It could be an electronic sensor issue, stuck thermostat, bad impeller, fuel related…the list goes on.

The water impeller (pump) is located inside the lower unit, not under the hood. I’ve changed several, but I wouldn’t call it easy until you’ve done it and know how it comes apart and goes back together.

I suggest to anyone who wants to do general maintainance on their boats or motors to get the manuals. You can buy one specific to your engine size, brand or type. You can also get a Seloc or Clymer manual that will cover most general maintainance problems for multiple motors hps in your brand.Which are only about 25$-30$ & will easily pay for themselves.

FYI, you have to pull the lower unit off to get to the impeller. If you are not mechanical you may want to take it in. Sure would blow to not get it put back together and cause other major problems. I get mine changed every other year and it costs me $200 bucks. It is well worth it.

Hey Suzuki you buy the kit and I`ll do it for half of that $200.

Another idea. On the back of the motor their is usually a plastic thumb screw just below the lid/ cowl. Not sure with a Suzuki that is “pissing”. But most modern outboards have a screw in for a garden hose to flush the motor. Frozen water or debris may have clogged impeller or sensor. While not knowing exact model of outboard unsure I’d you have intake. Otherwise you can try high output water with ears or a car wash. Just a thought before you bring it in. If not sounds like impeller.

Great tip whitetip, darn BK is sticking his photo everywhere.

One can save some money with many of this maintainance and if they do not know what they are doing, could be a costly mess.
