I was talking to my Mercury dealer the other day about a few service items for the motor.

He asked me when I changed my oil and filter.

I told him approx every 50 hours. I said I did it in the spring after I got the boat out of storage.

He then explained to me that I should be changing my oil and filter before I put the boat away for the winter. He explained that the oil change will remove the acidity from the old oil which can harm ones motor dueing the idle months in storage.

Has anyone else heard of this and if so, I must be a real dummy.

Yeah, I have heard that for years. I have no proof of it, but it’s a rule I follow for all my 4-stroke motors that I store for extended periods of time.

    yes,

I have heard of it also for farm and heavy equiment.

good idea if U can get her done.

Also keeps the dirt from settling to the bottom and staying there.

I think it is more important on the size or amount of oil.

U can have a crankcase that holds five or more gallons

I always change mine in the spring because I use my boat alot in the fall and periodically all winter. It is easier for me to change it in the spring when it is warmer out.

Yes, the acid can pit the crankshaft if the old oil is left in during the off season reducing the longevity of your motor.
