I have a couple promotional shirts embroidered with SPF 50 on the sleeves.

I kinda giggle when I look at it…I fish at night.

I had good look with the shirts that have bug repellent in them. They claim it’s good for 27 washings…it seemed to wear out somewhere around 15 to 20.

Columbia makes some awesome fishing clothing of course.

Here is what I have gotten in the past:
    1) Columbia has PFG shirts, both short sleeve and long sleeve (sleeve rolls up and buttons), 50spf.
    2) Eddie Bauer has fishing shirts that I have gotten that are 50spf I think and I have had luck finding these in the clearance bin.
    3) Sam’s club carries a Natural Gear fishing shirt again short and long sleeve. These are around $20.
    4) Columbia also has surf/swim shirts. Yeah, sounds strange but these are comfortable and breath well on those really hot days, even long sleeve.

I would have to say the Sam’s club and Eddie Bauer shirts are comfortable and breath well also and have lots of pockets. The surf/swim shirts have no pockets if that is important to you. I like the long sleeve for protection and also nice to roll up and button.

Check out local stores and a place like Siera Trading Post online. If you are spending long days on the water, please do something, skin cancer is very serious.

X2 I have a white Columbia long sleve shirt for those hot days works great, also have Columbia pants with the zip off legs to convert into shorts. You will pay more for Columbia but like the old saying “you get what you pay for” holds true.

OK, call me thick, it’s not the first time. Dumb question maybe, but doesn’t a normal shirt block the sun all by itself? Isn’t puttin SPF in a shirt like mixing flour in with my Sturiwheat Pancake mix? Invest in a bimini for the boat, yeah it’s a pain to fish around but gets the job done.

Slightly on the extreme side, but gets the point across.

When I crossed the desert on my scooter a “few” years ago, I had a long sleeve shirt on. I didn’t really notice the heat until I stopped to get gas and inhaled a can of dew.

DAMN was I sunburned under my shirt! Face was worse. Should have been wearing a full face helmet instead of the open face one I was using.

Certainly a top to a boat would be better, but sure gets in the way when casting.

    Czech,

Being bald I have had my scalp burnt many times riding the harley even when wearing a bandanna. Two layers of bandanna works, but who wants to wear two layers of shirts when fishing?

BK – I have never heard of the bug repellent shirts. Who manufactures them?

Google ExOfficio and look for bugaway shirts. Looks like the price has come down (I paid $70.) and the amount of washings went up.

They need to make bugaway socks!

I like the columbia pfg shirts too. They make a few that dont stain, they are called “blood and guts” i think. Designed for fishing. I have a few other brands too. I stock up when i go to florida every year, they have a great selection down there at any store. Plus they are necessary if ya fish down there.

Ah I got ya now, told you I was thick. Too much fishing at night and hiding under the top during the day to understand. I hear ya on the bald comment, there’s only two worse places to sun burn, the top of your feet and…..

I’ve never heard of getting sunburn under clothing. This sounds like a scam or a gross exageration at the least. BK’s desert experience- wearing lace doesnt count.

Until my first burnt scalp, I was saying the same as zuk. I only get these UV blocking shirts when they are on clearance And prefer them because of their cooling and drying abilities more than for the UV claims.

No one takes a person the runs a Jiffy seriously.

For the occasional angler, I don’t believe UV blocking is necessary.

    IMHO
