Ya know…I was thinking today

about our Governor’s proposed bill that will make it a gross misdemeanor if you’re caught transporting water in your live well or boat in MN either to or from a lake/river.

As it sits right now, we can be fined, but if this passes, we could be fined and go to jail.

I was pumping gas while these thoughts were running through my mind…much like the gas running out the pump, down the hose and into my tank.

I think our lawmakers in MN can make transporting water a misdemeanor, they should make selling gas over the price of $1.99 a gallon a misdemeanor too.

At $3.59 a gallon it should be a felony.

Just one of the thoughts I had today.

The felony theft will be when gas goes over $5.

I agree to a felony charge. Its highway robbery!I stopped to top off the boat & truck the other day & it cost $178.00 Gas is $3.65 here. Which its only going to get worse.A couple years ago prices topped out here at $4.19 & my truck & boat were both under 1/4 full.I had to stop the pump at $320.00 as it was starting to take the fun out of my wallet. I can walk out of a store with a $300 rod or a bunch of lures with a grin on my face. Knowing they will last a while. When you leave the gas station & know in the next week your likely going to be back for round 2. For me its likely going to mean taking closer trips near home again. I might educate my boys on how I grew up rowing the old 14′ Lund tri hull boat, which my wife now calls a lawn ornament. Where is the gas cops when you need them?

Our government would have to do something if it goes over $4.50 as it will totally shut down our economy.

There will be no extra money to purchase items as the cost of living will use it all up.

Many would also lose their jobs.

At that high a cost, we will see wars over oil land for sure.

Is gas 5 bucks a gallon right now??? NO…so get out and enjoy the fishing now. When gas goes to 5 bucks a gallon like everyone is predicting take a buddy or 3. then its about $1.25/gallon if 4 people go, that is reasonable, right? Solo fishing trips will be eliminated for most, take a buddy and split the cost 50/50 and it won’t be so expensive. We have to start thing positive about what we currently have, get out and enjoy it. Life is too short to complain about stuff, go out to do what we all love….fish to enjoy the great outdoors.

Ok I am off my soap box!

    I agree with you 100%.

What I was trying to say is that for many, they will not be able to do 25% of that gas cost.

Much of their money will go for higher food and gas to and fro work.

I would like to make numerous trips to Pool4 each year but at $120.00 per trip for gas, it cuts that down big time.

I figure this year, I will go there for 2 days and stay overnight. That way I get 2 days of fishing for the $125.00 in fuel.

I have 5 trips planed for this summer and I will be making all of them even if the price goes to wherever.

While I agree with this, have you watched what the current gov’t is doing? They aren’t looking out for the best interest of the people, that’s for sure.

To the point of the original post, I think sticking it to fisherman like that is as dumb as it gets. Do you really think this will stop the spread of invasives? They better start throwing the waterfowl in jail for spreading it while their at it.

This isn’t a gas price post…really. It’s more about making a person a criminal for transporting water to OR from a lake/river.

Assuming a judge would plop a boater in jail when found guilty, this will become part of your record. Most larger companies have background checks. I can’t say for sure that a person with this on their record would be held back from a job, but I can say with certainty it isn’t going to help them.

If transporting water AWAY from an infested lake is criminal, so is a gallon of gas at $3.59.

If a law ASSUMES this (possibly) infested water is going into another NON infested lake…(even though I’m going home) I think it’s plausible to ASSUME there is price fixing going on with gas prices. If they don’t need evidence, why should I?

To the folks that haven’t read what our Governor is proposing, ASSUMING it goes through, it’s going to be harder to think positive when you or your son.. that has a clean record now has a criminal background because he brought his boat home with some water in the bottom of it.

Personally, the part of this new law that allows any Law Enforcement officer to look in any compartment of my boat (no need for a warrant) doesn’t bother me. All they will find is stink bait.

I just don’t want a criminal background because I left the river to go home with water in my bilge or live well.

    Thank you SF.

i always knew too many bottles of High Life could turn the night into a bad one….never thought a bottle of Aquafina left in the boat could land me in the Hilton though…

I am all for control of the invasive species but these penalties are nuts.

How will they penalize the birds for transporting it and the huge ships in lake Superior?

I let my reps know what I think of their proposal.

OMG I hate to admit it but I also had such a thought the other day. Me and a VBFF figured we could be in jail by Memorial Day….

Now I ask, if residual water is in the bait or live well, could we also be in violation buy the water retained in the BOX FRAME of our boat trailers??? Thought of this has concerned me for a while.

What do others think regarding that?

Like all laws flatfish, I think it will be left to the interpretation of the officer checking your boat.

My boat leaks like an f’n sieve and my foam holds how much water, I don’t want to know. I can pump and drain it dry but it is never really dry. Ticket me right?

I think alot of dnr enforcement will just right or wrong this situation instead of listening to rational explainations, it would make thier jobs a whole lot easier. Those guys on the bully pulpit sure know how to yell the loudest. What ever happened to try to get people to pull together. Theres got to be a name for those people,,,oxypulpits?

I am concered about this even though I do empty every thing everytime.

Since the state is so off the deep end on this and the fact that the DNR could use some funds, I would guess there will be tickets written if any thing is in question about the boat.

I guess if this passes it will be wait and see.

    Scene from county lockup:

Mad Dog: “Hey man, what are you in for?”

Snake: “I robbed a liquor store. You?”

Mad Dog: “The cops were chasing me, for no good reason, so I fired a warning shot at them to get them off my tail.”

Snake: “What an egregious abuse of authority. I’ve never seen anything so heinous. Hey new guy, whattaya in for?”

Brian K: “I had water in my boat.”

    Snake: “You disgust me!”

Mad Dog: “You better watch yourself new guy.”

Ok, but you have to take deer in the headlight Dayton in return. Have fun with that.

The best part about it is they cannot stop invasive species, they can only slow their eventual spread.

I got an idea. If the invasive species are everywhere, there is no need for the law. So start spreading them with the cover of night and eventually the law will have to be repealed.

Umm…you are not the first person to utter those words in my ear.

I can’t see any sportsman that is against slowing or if there were a way, stopping the spread. But to make it criminal, is just criminal!

Buzz gave us a heads up on this several months ago.

It’s not too late to shoot an email to your legislator. Whether it will do any good or not is another question, but it’s only a minute out of your day.

Remember you out-staters…you have a horse in this race too. It’s easier to put a non local in the hooscow that it is a local. How’s that for tourism.

I hear ya BrianK, they have those signs down here too but not all the over amplified warnings too stress the DNR officers out and others too. The signs that are posted are for a headsup on just Milfoil, as of now thier hopeing common sense by itself is enough.
