I need a new battery for my minn-kota 55lb thrust v2 power drive. I do a lot of trolling and only use this battery for my trolling motor only. Was thinking of getting an optima. But don’t know about what size/amp hour rating ect. any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.I tried to get some info from the guys at the parts store but they are not too bright.I also just bought a minn-kota charger single bank 10amp 110volt, will this work on my new optima if I choose to buy one?

I’m assuming that your 55# is a 12 volt system, I would suggest a 27 series Optima, and yes the on-board charger you have will work fine……
March 26, 2011 at 12:32 am #950736I have the 27 series Optima and I have been very happy with it. Been in the boat for 4 years and is as good as new.
March 26, 2011 at 12:41 am #950740You should really go with the biggest they have. You wont regret it. I run all optimas and buy from http://www.shop.optimabatteries.com free shipping and best price out there.
So I recommend the D31.
You wont be disappointed!!

duddeckPosts: 4March 26, 2011 at 1:24 am #950752I have two optima batteries for my 24 volt system which worked fine. I just up graded to a 36 volt system on the boat. Talked to minn kota rep about getting another optima battery and he explained i should go with a agm sealed battery. I asked why and he explained the thing you need to consider with a deep cycle battery is the amp hours. The amp hours are the longevity of the battery. I believe i looked at the 27 optima and the amp hour was like 75 and the amp hour on a agm equivalent battery was a 105 amp hours. I picked up my battery at farm and fleet at 176.99 versus 219.99 for the optima. Plus the agm battery has longer warranty. Talked to the farm and fleet manager about optima batteries. He told me they were going to discontinue carrying them because they are now built in mexico and aren’t holding up as well. Don’t know if this is true or not. For now i am going to try the agm battery and see if it holds up. Time will only tell. Hopefully this info helps
March 26, 2011 at 1:29 am #950754Do you need to recharge quickly on your fishing trips if so your minn-kota 10amp charger will work well for that. If you do not fish more than one day in row you could get by with a charger/maintainer. When I had a 12 volt trolling motor I used a charger/maintainer that puts out 1.5 amps, the slower charge will help prolong the life of your optima battery. I have an optima battery that I used on my 12 volt trolling motor and when I upgraded to a 24 volt trolling motor I started using the optima battery for my starting battery and I still use the charger/maintainer on that battery and it is going on its 8th season of use. When my boat is parked in the garage this charger stays plugged in 24\7, You can pick one of these up at Fleet Farm or Batteries Plus for around $30. You could also have both chargers in the boat, use the 10 amp when you fish more than one day in a row and use the charger/maintainer when the boat is parked in the garage. The pic is of my charger/maintainer.

Welcome to In-DepthOutdoors dsquared!!!
Thanks for the info I will have to check out the AGM sealed battery when it is time to replace mine.
March 26, 2011 at 2:33 am #950766I checked my batteries and I thought they were a 27 but they are 31 series.
I have heard very good things about the AGM batteries.
I bought one of my Optima batteries on sale for $150.00 a few years back
duddeckPosts: 4March 26, 2011 at 3:03 am #950769Actually i think the optima batteries are a type of agm battery. They use a spiral design versus square plates. You get more punch out of the square agm battery versus the spiral design. All you got to do is pick one up to compare and you will tell the difference.

I do not know for sure but I would be willing to bet that they make both a Gel and a AGM or maybe the AGM has replaced there Gel battery.

I have had mine now for over five years still 100% after setting all winter in boat without being charged since October
These things are great They do not leak
No onboard charger to buy,
I charge them when I get home or to the room, with regular 10 amp charger
You DO NOT HAVE TO BABY SIT THEM
March 26, 2011 at 6:51 am #950784REALY GUYS!!?? Slab Stalker here is the bottme line… F all this name brand talk compare the numbers and decide what works the best for you, I would go with the biggest I can fit for the lowest price unless you intend to run the thing at 8+ most of the time in which case a upgrade may be in mind
March 26, 2011 at 12:22 pm #950804Thanks guys for all the info. Now I have a little info in my pocket before making my choice. Will have to see what kinda deal I can get. And yes I have a ton of extra room so going with a massive battery is acceptable.
Thanks again!SS
