Ok, I’m going snagging paddlefish in Oklahoma next week with some buddies. Never done it before. It looks like hard work and they fight pretty well.
Has anyone done this kind of fishing?
Other than tackle, is there anything else I should take?
    Thanks.

    a Strong back!
Pay attention to the trebel hook requirements on width. Braided line as well is needed. I know you said other than tackle.

A camera? Good luck. When you hit your first good size one, you’ll know it. Feels like you caught a tree. Hang on to the rod.

Are they the same as the ones in the Mississippi? I snagged one jigging with 6lb line, and it was a battle!!!!

I’ve never done it, but certainly would love to have a go at it someday.

One of the Team Catfish sister companies is Spoonbill King

    http://www.shop.spoonbillking.com/ out of Grove, OK.

There’s an info email address at the bottom of the web site. They will have the latest and greatest info on current laws and snagging equipment.

Make sure you get a lot of photos!

Here’s an paddlefish that was snagged while catfishing a couple years ago on the sippi.

    They are a HOOT!

funny thing u bring up Grove, OK.

that is where I went a few years back and did it.

they must have a bunch of them there, three of us went on a guided trip there. Was work at trying 2 snag them, but it was not much of a issue getting your limit of one each and it was a slow short day 4 us

Ahh, the mighty Paddlefish. This brings me back to the days I was stationed at the Minot AFB and would make the annual trip out to williston, ND where the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers meet.(Confluence area) Out there the snagging wasn’t always very easy and we found that One rod per two people was just about right in order to give one guy a rest and chance to drink a beer. We used a 10′-12′ MED HVY Surf rod with a BIG spincast reel. We always used 30lb Trilene Big game mono line. This I feel is important as any heavy duty no-streach line is damn near impossible to break off during snags. Which you probably will have a lot off. So bring extra line! I dont remember for sure how we rigged our weight and hooks but I know we used a 1.0 treble hook and a 5oz weight. Rigged hook ahead of the weight about 1.5′-3′ depending on the fish. If people around us were snagging them or you could see the fish “rolling on the surface” put more space between hook and weight to get it off the bottom. If the fish are not very active or tight to bottom keep it closer together. Anyhow, it is awesome when you hook into one! Yell FISH-ON so everyone close to you clears there line and make sure someone nearby has about a 10′ gaff. Hope this helps a little. Sorry I cant post a pic of the 69incher I caught but it was before the time I used a digital camera. Have Fun and bring asprin.

I’ve got an uncle who heads up to Williston each year for this event. He’s got some amazing stories.
