Political post question

Another thought comes to mind.. awhile back, I started a NFC North Division group, because some of us would get out of control with our Favre/Football talks.. all the usual suspects joined my group, and it never really took off ??? Seems we would rather posture and smack in front of the public, but it was no fun in the closet (if that makes sense) I actually was civil and agreeing the Packers would probably win the SB & the Vikings sucked and Favre was done… not in public, but rather where it didn’t count… in the closet Either way, I’d join the politico group.. everybody is entitled to my facts

I’m not sure this is the best spot for such a thing. I’m not sure what the vision/mission of IDO is, but I’d wonder if it meshes.

I would agree with others that perhaps a political forum is not the best.

I am sure it would cut down on the positive PM’s from people who do not know me who are concerned I did not read their opinion on a particular topic, let me just say that for nothing…

I’m not sure having a “group” for politics will limit posts in other/general forums.

It has just been my experience that people that have a point to make albeit political/religious/my opinion is better than your opinion: many wish to do it in a very public way; “fishing” (pun intended) for argument and naysay.

If it is set up as a group forum, so it`s basically out of most peoples sight except those that want to partake. I would rather see it set up as a open debate forum. That way it is not strictly political there are many other issues that could be discussed. Rules would have to be adhered to was any name calling or direct attacks would not be tolerated, and no POSTS get carried into the general forum PERIOD.

I would be in. It can be fun to have a good indepth discussion on subjects.

I don’t care if there is a special political forum or not. But I would like to see anyone making a political comment be banned from the website for a month. After their second violation, they would be banned for a year. I really get turned off by those political comments on any fishing forums.

I don’t know if it will work or not… but… the easiest thing for people totally repugged by political posts, is not to open them. By the “title” of this one, “Political post question” I pretty much deciphered it would be about politics (and I am no genius). I guess it’s kinda like watching a train wreck.. you hate to see it happen, but cannot help watching it unfold

You’re right G, we don’t have to open them. I like going to a fishing site where people are dedicating their insight to fishing related topics or other topics that don’t turn into blood bath though. I might have a good question I want resolved but the guy that could’ve answered it best was too busy arguing about politics and missed it. Maybe one of the members here can build a political fishing site or something. That way some of you guys can have your cake and eat it too.

If that is what is really wanted then go for it. I will not be a part of it. I tried to debate political issues on another website and it just turned ugly with name calling and personal attacks on people with out really debating the facts, issues and opinions. This carried over to other discussions in other forums and the reason I am no longer associated with that site. It is sad when we can not respect others opinions and debate in a respectfull manner. I have a friend and we could not be more opposite on political issues but we respect each others opinions and have great debates. Alot of the time we end up agreeing to disagree, but that is half the fun and we each learn something from it. Ideally if this could happen this way it would be a great group ,but it always seems to turn sour because people are passsionate about their opinions and feelings. So if you do start one I hope it goes well for you but I won’t be there. Good luck

For once I have to agree with G, seems like a simple answer, start a political group and have at it, those who don’t want to partake, just don’t open that group.

Can’t see how that’s going to offend anybody who doesn’t want to be offended..???

I love it when people want other people banned or make rules when it isn’t their site.

I say if no politics, then no Packers, no Twins, no weather, no dogs, no who owns a _____ with an IDO sticker, no help my lawn mower won’t run, no look what I grilled, no I have toilet paper for sale, no congrats on your engagement…

If anyone doesn’t have the ability to resist a thread labeled political or the nuts to close and ignore a thread about anything that they don’t like, then they should throw their computer out the window. Seriously, there are some real cupcakes in the world or people who have nothing better than to tell other people (or ask them to be banned) how to live (iuse the site) just because they don’t like it. Get over yourselves and learn a little self control or build up your will power to just move on when you see something you don’t agree with on the site.

Sheesh. I am beginning to think my friend is right. He doesn’t come here anymore because of all the whining and beaching that goes on.

I really like those strawberry cupcakes with the pink frosting on them. I’ll even eat those sons a’ guns without the frosting. I had two for breakfast this morning as a matter of fact.

The owner of the website has already said a member can start any member group they want. Anyone interested in participating in the discussion in that group will have to ask for access. The posts in a group are not displayed openly in the forums like the rest of the topics.

For that reason, I really don’t see what’s being discussed here. IDO isn’t going to create an open forum for the discussion of politics, religion… or even football. That’s what the member groups are for. Going this route insures two things.

    1) – members have an avenue to discuss most anything they want to discuss.

    2) – if someone doesn’t want to participate or even see a discussion on politics or other hot-button topic, if you don’t want to see it… you never will.

You’d have to WANT to see it and go through the process of asking for access.

I hope this clarifies the difference between a forum and a group and their intended usage.

Why do we have member groups? IDO has always tried to keep moderation to a minimum and provide members with some degree of choice and control with regards to what they read or contribute here. The member groups are another example of this in action.

The only caveat I have for allowing member’s to create a group would be topics of hate speech, illegal activity or pornography. Not that anyone here would start such a group… just sayin.

There we go. We just need to start a no holds barred Political Trash Talk group and we will keep the Fishing site from getting cluttered up. Twinkies and Cupcakes need not apply.

Sounds good. Now to get started we better form a committee and schedule some meetings to figure out how this will work.

The rules are simple, “no political posts”. Let’s say you are reading an interesting post about fishing and someone highjacks the post and interjects their political views, then opposing political posts occur. Soon the content of the original thread is lost and it may be deleted.

There is no incentive for these people to stop injecting their political views on any fishing related thread, after all the thread/post is just deleted. One way keep these people from highjacking fishing posts is to ban them for continually breaking the rules. If you have a better suggestion to stop these people from breaking the rules, then lets hear it.

PS: By calling people who do not share your views (twinkies and cupcakes) shows some real maturity.

Using the ban for behavior correction is a knee jerk reaction that rarely results in a positive outcome. The people that visit here aren’t children and telling them to go sit in the corner for an outburst or first time infraction is treating them like… a child.

IDO uses the ban when you’ve proven you cannot play well here with others. When you’re banned… you get one shot to come back and stay on the path while our fingers hover over the trigger. Nobody comes back from a second ban.

We prefer to send people an email or PM and attempt to talk with them about expectations versus using a ban as a first attempt at behavior adjustment.

This methodology must work well because we have very few people on the banned list and I doubt we delete more than a couple threads a week on average.
