The FW heard from somewhere that ‘there were 100’s of Bald Eagles over on the Mississippi’…. I’m not sure if they were talking the Lacrosse area or if I’d have to go up around P4. Either way we’re making a road trip of it tomorrow (Friday) but if it’s worth it to go up to P4 a guy would at HAVE to stop in and at least check out Everts’ I mean drive all that way and not stop doesn’t seem right… unfortunately no fishing on this trip, just earning brownie points for the upcoming walleye run around here….

Covile Park always seems to have quite a few baldies.

It’s safe Al. Just a little running inside joke that Mr. Plantz and I have going.

Great place for eagle watching. Many times there are people out there with tripods and telephoto lenses getting shot of them. Binoculars would be of help there.

Last Sunday there were two pair diving and such right in front of Everts. It’s spectacular and always stops me in my tracks.

Many times I have enjoyed the eagles watching more than the fishing,

They are a very majestic bird.

Thanks guys, really appreciate it. The FW and I will have a good trip I’m sure, just too bad won’t be able to bring the boat this time…. Should also be able to make a side trip to Everts, really need a new jigging rod, and heard they might just have a few to look at…

Last year my family and I checked out the National Eagle Center in Wabasha and we were told there that one of the best places to see numbers of eagles along the river is Reeds Landing because this area has the most nesting birds in the area.

Sorry Stuart, I couldn’t help myself, but the river is not full of eagles. The trees and skies along the river might be, but the eagles only get their feet wet at times. You’re probably thinking of ospreys, eh? lol

Well we made it up there yesterday, drove up along 35 mainly. We saw quite a few single and pairs of eagles flying around, mostly up high around the bluffs just circling. Prolly seen 25 to 30 birds by the time we got up to Everts. Was able to meet Dean and talk for a few minutes before hitting the road again. Did manage to fill a nice shopping bag of moxies and other tackle to try down here on the Rock and southern Fox…
After we left we went over to Red Wing and checked out Coville park, there were a few eagles flying around there, watched a pair for almost 10 minutes, first one of them caught a fish then perched waiting for the other one to catch lunch too… it took a couple more minutes but the other one caught one finally and landed in a tree to eat. The other had finished and taken flight again waiting for the other to eat. When it was done, it took off and both birds just headed down river together… The FW really was impressed with all the birds.
After we left Coville I wanted to go up and see L&D #3. Did see one sign for it saying visitor center was closed but never actually seen it… Saw what I think was the nuke plant by the casino but no joy on finding the dam.
By now it was later on in the afternoon and we just headed back down 61. For about 3 miles above L&D#5 the center of the river channel was open and the eagles were just sitting on the edge of the ice by the open water… singles, pairs, groups of birds up to 5 at a time…. in those couple miles must’ve seen easily 50 birds… only bad thing was the FW wanting to stop and look and that’s not happening along that strech of Hwy. We saw a few more down toward winona but it was sundown at that point and traffic was picking up.
