As I was cleaning my sauger from Lake of the Woods that I caught over the weekend I started to think…Why can’t a lake like Mille Lacs (has deep mud just like LOW…) support a population of sauger? Winni? Leech? Red? I would love to have the opportunity to catch 6-8 of them along with perch and eyes’ on Mille Lacs. Maybe this question has an easy answer…RR

You’re talking classic walleye waters here. Man I can hear the outcry if the DNR were to even humor a thought on this. While there is nothing wrong at all with sauger, do we want to upset nature’s balance by stocking them in places they are not found naturally?

Rarely do I get a sauger over 13″ on LOW. I would hate to have a bunch of dinks in ML. Eating to forrage base when the walleyes are plentiful and great sized.

Now if they could get the P4 strain in there I might be willing to listen.

    Just my opinion. -Mark

The DNR has said that sauger used to be in ML’s (many, many years ago…) I just thought I would ask the question…BTW all the sauger we kept this weekend were 15″-17″…Get away from the crowds and you can get em’. Thanks for your opinions …RR

I have caught sauger in Mille Lacs. They were always very small, and it has been a few years since I caught one, but they were there. Maybe they eelpout have found where they went and followed?

I don’t know alot about sauger but had always been told that they prefer a dirtier environment and more flow than a walleye does. Not sure if it’s true but we can’t get that many really big eyes in the Kansas lakes but the Saugeye really do well in the dirty water in our western lakes and they are a hybrid of eyes and sauger that are stocked.
