Summer Jobs

So this summer, I will be looking for a job to pay for college in addition to getting my guiding business started. Last summer I worked at Fleet Farm as a Sporting Goods Sales Associate in Hudson WI. I was wondering if anyone knows any baitshops/custom tackle shops/anything like that-that hires summer help. I am knowledgeable about all things fishing and hunting. I would gladly work at Fleet Farm again this summer, but I am hoping to try and find something a little better. If anyone has any information on anything like this, that would be greatly appreciated. If not, thats fine too. I also have worked on many farms and can do a LOT of odds and ends jobs!

    Thanks

If I was your age I would head to LOTW and work on the charter boats at a resort for 2 reasons, you state you want/or are a guide already, this will give you a great deal of customer interaction all good, bad, and ugly. It will also allow you to live in an enviornment that from the sounds of it you like…fishing… You should also have a great chance to save money living in baudette as well.

Who knows you could get burnt out from fishing, I know it sounds strange, but for a guy who doesn’t do it everyday day in and day out you will never understand the motivation needed to make a single dollar in this industry.

You can say that again Calvin..After spending years fishing every free minute I had I made the leap to guide part time after checking out everything. It is a whole different world when you guide. All the extra stress of having to make things happen.Making sure everything is safe for people that arent on boats all the time and the people that can’t enjoy a day on the water.I loved and hated almost every minute of it for eight years and was glad I still had a full time job to pay the bills and not have to depend on it.But a great learning experience for me.

Not sure, but I doubt you would make much working at a tackle shop. Maybe somebody who knows will comment, but I would assume it would be like most retail jobs that are minimum wage or only a little better.
I always try to get the best paying job I can find for the summer, and I still work part-time during school. I have worked at factories for three summers, and built grain bins one summer.

I have worked at tackle shops in different capacities, including owner for over 20 yrs. I can just about gaurentee that you would make as much or more working at FF. or any place else for that matter. The only reason to do it is because you love doing it. If you’re trying to save money for school you would do better at something else.

If I was you I would contact some charter boat captains on Lake Michigan and be a deckhand for the summer. Ill bet the tips would be good. If I could do it over again while I was in college thats what I would do.

My cousin worked on Lake Michigan for a few years, got his captains license, ended up in Alaska fishing halibut and king salmon running a tourist boat out of a resort. The owners ended up paying him to be a caretaker in the winter. It entailed firing up the ice breaker, cruising around the harbor and collecting fresh shrimp and crabs from the traps.
