Hey you guys this is gonna be the first year i am gonna go hard for walleyes. I know that plastics are a big key. What kind of plastics do you guys encourage and on what kind of “jigs” or hooks do i put them on? I only trolled cranks and used lindy rigs before. I know that there are “moxi’s”? is that right? I dont know but could you great walleye guys help me out?

I am making a trip to Cabellas saturday so hopefully i can find this stuff there?

If you are going to target walleye this Spring some proven plastics to start with are ringworms and paddle tails. Moxies are a good choice as well but I would look for them to excel in more of a stained water environment or warmer water environment. Once the water temps climb in the low 40’s some of those bigger baits can make a lethargic walleye second guess themselves

You may want to try those plastics on BfishN H2O jigs. They have a metal bait keeper thats fantastic for holding plastics on and also does a great job with live bait. You can click on the banner below to take you to BfishN web site. Everts Resort also carries a lot of these baits. If you want to get set up for walleyes try a trip to everts. He has a bait shop geared towards walleyes and the knowledge to go along with it. Bring the boat and get a day of fishing in to. You wont find that at Cabelas.

I’d second Mike here that a trip to Evert’s to see Dean is well worth it to get all the tools you need to get going, and you can practice with them year round down there. For pitching plastics it’s hard to beat a Limit Creek “Smoothie” rod & reel of your choice spooled with some new Suffix 832, which Dean also has ready for you.
    Good luck!

If your looking to learn plastics and walleyes I would suggest hiring either Dustin or Mike to guide you on the Mississippi. Dustin on P4 and Mike on P2 will give you a lot of information on how to fish plastics, what to look for, and what colors seem to work the best. Its a great way to learn the basic techniques to fish plastics from someone who has a ton of expierence.

This link might help you pick out some good colors

Shorten you learning curve by hiring one of the guides mentioned above. They will definitely teach you how to use the plastics mentioned in my article.

A trip to Everts Resort on pool 4 is also an excellent suggestion. Dean is full of walleye wisdom and has tons & tons of plastics. Not to knock the sales people at Cabela’s, but for sure, you’ll learn far more talking with Dean at Everts Resort than you ever will talking with the people at Cabela’s.

So many options today that it really can be overwelming starting out fishing plastics. They are however, quite similar to crankbait fishing. There are several sizes and colors available depending on water conditions and time of year.Smaller profile neutral colored plastics for cold clear water to large profile neon colors for warm dirty water with several choices in between. The biggest mistake I see folks make is limiting themselves to one or 2 sizes of jigs. That would be like a mechanic buying a partial set of wrenches, granted you may use one or 2 more often than not,but factors like wind, flow, and depth can vary a jig size 2 weights or more. The “hot” bait is only as good as how it is presented. Good Luck & have fun!

X2 on their jigs, they work great, I have also had luck with their 3.5″ paddletails on both walleyes and crappies.

All excellent points made above. Dean hit a point I was thinking of with it being overwhelming. A guy can spend a small fortune on plastics to get everything at once. Meeting up with Dean would be great to have the right person working with you to prioritize what to buy for where and when. That way, if needed, you can scale back part of your investment upfront. Then its just adding to it as you need to. Much like us guys with an extreme addition to crankbaits.
