USMC 81-85. I was deployed pretty much all 4 years. I was in Radio Communications. I did a stint with Grunts in Okanawa, Artillery in North Carolina, Airborn in California and with a stage 3 repair shop deplayed on a Navy ship traveling around the far east. (Phillipines, Korea, Tiawan, too many ports to list!) Best thing to happen to a 18 year old kid out of high school that knew everything. Never got shot at – I was lucky!

That is nothing compared to any person who signed up after 9/11. You guys/gals have some serious gonads and my never ending respect and gratitude!!

    • Enlisted 22 September 1967 and retired on 30 June 2002 – spent 34+ years in the United States Army with 4 ½ years on Active Duty and 30 years full-time service with the Minnesota Army National Guard.
    • Served in Republic of Vietnam from 1968 – 1969 with Co A 101st Aviation Battalion 101st Airborne Division as a Warrant Officer, Helicopter Pilot.
    • Took a direct commission to 1LT in 1970 and hung in there retiring at age 55 as a Colonel. It was a good career and I had the privilege of serving in some great command and staff assignments in Aviation and Infantry units. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.
    • I sure am proud of the soldiers I see today serving in some incredibly demanding assignments. I salute their sacrifice and their families sacrifice.

79 Basic and AIT at Ft. McClelland, AL for 95B
79-91 with the 257th MP Co. (Minnesota’s Elite!)
Sniper & SRT 81-90 (M-14’s with drop compensator scopes)
We were White hats originally, and then became POW specialists and dealt with the Cuban Exodus to the US back in the early 80’s.
We used to catch rides on Colonel DeMar’s Wop-Wop Birds! We would drop in and create hasty POW camps. I got out, and not to long after I got out, Desert Shield began. My brother got to go to that one.

Holy cow, Ft. Sill. Been there, done that. Never snuck off post into Lawton, but I heard stories. My daughters found my year book from my stay on post. My oldest says, “Daddy, why was your head so white and skinny?”
